From the Sale website..

Sale Sharks Fly Half Charlie Hodgson will be leaving the club at the end of the current season. The 30 year England International and British Lions Tourist will depart after eleven seasons at the Sharks, where he has amassed a Premiership record 1,753 points

Sale Sharks CEO Mick Hogan commented, “We are naturally disappointed that Charlie has told us that he will be leaving the club but would like to thank him for all his efforts over the past eleven seasons. Without doubt he will be considered one of the greatest players to ever play for Sale Sharks.

"We made it clear to Charlie that we wanted him to stay at Sale but understand his reasons for wishing to move on. We know what a difficult decision this has been for Charlie to make and the club are thankful for the early indication he has given us on his future. Hopefully this will now end the recent intense speculation on the matter and will allow the player and his Sharks team-mates to concentrate on the second half of the season as there is still lots to play for in the Aviva Premiership and LV= Cup”

Hodgson joined the club straight from University and has won the Premiership Final and two European Challenge Cups with the Sharks since making his debut against French side Auch in 2000.

Hogan continued, “We now need to look to the future for Sale Sharks and to continue to build a winning squad around our current crop of outstanding, young, locally produced players. Our recruitment process is well underway for the 2011/12 season and beyond, not only for Charlie’s replacement, but to strengthen the squad from 1-15.”

Speaking about his decision Charlie Hodgson said, “Irrespective of what has happened this season at the club, I wanted a new challenge elsewhere. I am not getting any younger and wouldn’t want to hang up my boots wondering whether I should have moved. Sale Sharks have always been good to me and I have made many friends at the club, both on and off the field. The fans are very special and they can rest assured that I will be giving everything and more whilst I am still a Sharks player and want to leave the club on a high note.

"'Alex-knows-all', I agree with you; Edgeley Park is 'the pits' and a serious disincentive for advancement of Sale Sharks."

Maybe in terms of attracting fans, but apparently most of the players, especially the home-grown guys, really like Edgeley Park, and the areas in Cheshire and Greater Manchester are what attract a lot of the star names to the club. Peel mainly stayed because he really likes the area he is living in.

If public transport to Edgeley Park is "poor", from where are you travelling? Why would anyone think Salford City Reds' new stadium would be any better? As far as I can see, it would be about 15 minutes walk from the nearest current bus route. A move to Barton could lose Sale hundereds if not thousands of supporters. More investment in Edgeley Park might be the answer?

agree with CIAsilkman about the area and this is why Luke McAlister i feel may come back to Sale. He grew up in Manchester (father RL player), his best mate is Cueto and he loved living in Hale..Watch this space. It also buys the owners time with a bluechip player..

I'd rather see Rob Miller progress than pay a fortune for a 10 from another club. We've had a mixed bunch over the years, mainly covering for Charlie's injuries or international duty.

Its a massive blow as he is always a stand out performer. In truth I'm not sure where he will go, the only two choices would be Bath or Northampton as I can't see him going to France. Im sure now Mallinder knows he's available there'll be some interest from him.

With this news and the news that Sheridan wants to leave I expect a few others to go as well. Matt Tait owes us a few performances in my opinion but he may well leave and with him being out of the England picture I'm sure that a few french clubs will show interest. Also will the change of management have been enough to convince Chris JOnes he is wanted by the club after he was effecively neglected by the Brewer regime.

The main priority now has to be to ensure we retain the likes of Gaskell Fearns etc and build a time around the undoubtedly talented youngsters we have. Over recent years we have proved that a team full of star individuals doesnt necessarily lead to success. Build a youthful side that is commited to playing for the team and see if we can rebuild a team that may in a few years be potential challengers. Remember that the title winning side had very few star names but a group of whole hearted players who played for each other.

It's not the end of the world as Miller could be a very good player given time in the role and the right coaching. Lets hope that now we have the right coach in charge we can have a good end to the season and maybe let these guys leave us with the LV cup title.

We need to let Hodgson leave and try and get some new young, quick players rather than big names who don't really want to be there.

We need to let Hodgson leave 'UNBELIEVABLE'what planet do you live on.

There is a simple answer to why Charlie is leaving, no ambition no more serious financial backing.
Meeting last week would have gone like this CH I am happy to sign a new contract but Brian what are your plans for the club going forward in terms of recruitment and keeping quality players at the club. BK cough splutter eeeer I am really trying hard to build a squad in these difficult times I have spent millions on the squad and the books have to be balanced. End of Conversation.
We have some exiting individuals Gaskell Fearns and Brady but with no quality experience around them they will find life very tough in the premiership.
IMO BK should sell up for £1 and let somebody else have a go there have been offers before but won't sell.

I totally agree with you!! We are loosing the greats because we arent paying them the money they desrve. Its not like the flop footballers these are the men of sport who deserve everything because they give everything. And because we have been reluctant the give everything back the sale players are leaving. Young players??? we've got enough in the first team and they are flooding in through the academy. But this isnt football. If Wayne rooney, giggs, scholes and nevielle all left united now the youngsters would be stuffed. We've Lost our experienced guys. We only have sheri, cueto, briggs and possibly tait(if we dont loose him.

Now its been cofirmed our number 10 is going to sarries. But with the rumours flying around of McAlister looking to move back to the Prem would it not be wise to give him a ring and offer him the number 10 shirt??? He was either there or 12 for us and with his extra large legs kicking for goal wont be a problem.
