I rest my case on Clint Dempsey

Premier League Fulham

Anybody who ever questioned whether Clint Dempsey should be starting for Fulham has probably been silenced by this point.

I do remember many plenty on this forum who favored Davies over Dempsey.

And yes, I know Dempsey's production has gone up with the Zamora injury, but his knack for scoring and quality must be utilized even when Zamora comes back...whenever that may happen.

I know the injury to Zamora cast a pall on the season for most fans here, but I for one am happy that it has allowed Clint Dempsey to play 90 minutes.

Over the past month, I'm not sure I've seen many better players in the premeirship. I wonder if the big clubs will come calling in January?

"AJ's ... a clone of Eddie Johnson"

As someone once said, there's no answer to that. Priceless!

Where to start ....?

I don't think any honest knowledgeable regulars on this board ever doubted whether Dempsey should start, but I'll agree that in some cases Davies ability to cross the ball comes in very handy.

But I don't think Dempsey's been himself since his knee injury February. Even through the WC, he wasn't playing at his best, but over the last month I think we're seeing the old Clint "Mom I just shaved" Dempsey coming back into top form.

AJ is not a clone of Eddie Johnson. He's a clone of Yul Brynner, and he's a far more effective player than EJ. AJ is class, but I'll say this about Eddie Johnson, at least he's not Diomansy Kamara!

Why are we Fulham supporters denigrating Clint ? We should be supportive of our players, not - as they say on Eastenders, "slagging them off ".I was at the match today.IMO , Clint had a great game -as did Dembele (PACE Gilly )-and Andrew Johnson looked very sharp in the 10 minutes that he played (what ARE you thinking, TTAH ? )
Must also say that I was mega unimpressed with this Wigan side that won at Spurs, were unbeaten away in the Premiership until today and hadn't lost in 6 matches. They didn't even win a corner till the 83rd minute.
Not that this must detract from a very impressive Fulham performance. From all the team.
BTW,Rocky57, "Des " Horne's first name was Stan. Not the greatest player, I recall, but a loyal grafter, one you would always want to have in your side.

Well, Dempsey's Revenge seems to be doubting either my honesty or my knowledge. Which is it DR?

Last season, I thought Roy had it right when he was preferring Davies and Duff on the wings and Gera as second striker. When Zamora was fit, there was rightly no starting place for Dempsey. I'd still put Davies and Gera ahead of Dempsey in the wide midfield roles, Duff too if he can get back his August to Feb form of last year. I would put Dempsey ahead of Gera as a striker now, though - he seems to suit the Hughes Fulham in that role more than Gera does, just as Gera was a better fit for the way Roy had us playing.

So, Dempsey isn't one of the best two choices for the wide midfield positions, and he's behind Dembele and a fit Bobby for the striking positions. Whether Clint or AJ is a better bet alongside Dembele in the meantime remains to be seen. Certainly, Dempsey should continue starting until he falters and/or AJ uses sub appearances to show that he's really back to his goalscoring best - something he hasn't really shown since his move, but which I haven't given up on.

And, by the way, none of this is anti-American. I've never read any comments that sounded anti-American on this board, only complaints from posters who seem over-sensitive to any criticism, no matter how balanced or reasoned, to American players. Like many here, McBride was a big favourite of mine (he's still my 7 year old's favourite Fulham player - and Dempsey is his current favourite) and I commented positively on Eddie Johnson after the Wolves game. I don't care where Fulham players come from, I just care about what they do on the pitch for us.

Dempsey is a great player and when he is selected, he's never someone whose presence worries me in the slightest. That said, I don't think he should be an automatic starter regardless of form and fitness of other players.

Thanks for the correction Ilford. I looked up Des Horne, he played in the 50's & 60's for Wolves and Blackpool.

It must have started I suppose, my old brain's getting addled.

I think that Gera edges Dempsey for a starting spot upfront. Gera is more efficient with the ball, whilst also offering some of the trickery that Dempsey brings. Demps can occasionally be guilty of losing the ball, breaking up the attack. Gera on the other hand will run all day and link up the play well.

I like the way Demps will have a go rather than trying to walk the ball in, but his accuracy is sometimes a little wanting.

That being said, I love Demps and was chuffed that he got a brace yesterday. I just think that Gera is better as the link up player, with Demps coming in off the wing.

Clint as have most of the USA boys, has been top class for FFC. His chip v Juve will always be a highlight. The man is a legend. Totally agree Scott. You will always get knockers of certain players. One bloke described Zamo as a West Ham donky at Brum in his first season and another amusingly described Aaron Hughes as rubbish on the returning coach last week. Like beauty, player contribution is in the eye of the beholder.

A short time ago, both Gera and Baird were under the cosh. Now two of the most improved players at the club, able to fill more than one role.

Dempsey is a good player. I will always support him and back him. However if every member of the squad was fit Dempsey would not be in the starting XI nor should he be.

I love watching Fulham. I didn't really realize how much until the last few years. I'll watch another team play and enjoy it, but I'm outright excited and buzzed when I watch Fulham. There's just something about them that suits me, and I've been watching them since Mcbride and Bocanegra. I wouldn't regularly comment on this thread because I don't believe a player's nationality is a factor when the manager is trying to win and his job depends on it. But in this case there are comments that make no sense to me. AJ? How much more time and how many chances should he get. He runs and hustles, but without more size or the ability of a Tevez or Messi he really isn't the answer for Fulham. With what Dempsey has accomplished for Fulham why would anyone even remotely suggest that AJ could take his place whatever his form. Gera is a good player, but his form is really up and down for extended periods. I could see Gera getting starts at Fulham and sometimes at the exclusion of Dempsey. I like Davies, but Dempsey has scored more than double the amount of goals as Davies in the same amount of time and Fulham have never been prolific goal scorers. They need all the help they can get. What I don't get is that no one mentions Dempsey's passing. He can be very creative with the through ball. He can be a slick and sly passer of the ball in a way that the other Fulham players are not, although Murphy is a very good passer. Because it's so difficult to score in football they don't usually lead to a goal, but I think that element is essential to Fulham if they want to compete at a high level. It's the element of surprise and creativity and Dempsey has it. Whether it's with a pass or a shot he adds more to the team than people realize. The only element on the offensive end that is more essential is Zamora's ability to hold the ball and wear down a defense. The one frustration I have with Dempsey is that sometimes his work rate is down a bit and he doesn't hustle as much on defense, but last year he really improved in that area.

goeast12 I agree with most of what you write,
What has made Fulham better this season is the addition of Dembele, he has the ability to take on players. One more thing to add about Dempsey apart from his ability in the air, his willingness to shoot he provides, most of the time a long with Davies, an important add-on. He can score from free kicks.
