Hi all,We are set to sign Darius Vassel and/or Jason Roberts.I would prefer Roberts if we could only get one. But if we got both would be better. news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foo...

What have we ALL being saying this season?....."we need a finisher". Vassell, if we can get him fit / motivated, at 30, is surely a better bet than what we currently have [or haven't]. Sorry - but much as I love Steve Howard, he's a one-trick-pony, everyone knows how to play him, he's got no pace, and if we're serious about going up the table, we simply have to convert our woeful chances to goals ration. I'd love to see Matty back in the reckoning, but I've a feeling his future may lie elsewhere.

While I'm not ecstatic about Vassell, it's clear Sven rates him very highly and Sven got a lot of good out of him for England. If he still has some of that pace he could do quite a bit of damage in this league. I see him more as a winger than a forward though.

Sorry, one thing you could never accuse Darius of is being a deadly finisher. What you will get is a good, honest pro who always gives 100% and who won't whine when asked to sit on the bench. He is easily Championship standard and could probably still do a shift in a lower Prem League team. It's possible in the championship, if he's kept his pace and with his strength, he may bang in a few goals if played as a striker. Just don't expect him to be a Torres, his goalscoring to opportunity ratio would be awful if analysed I think. His best position is probably right wing although not knowing what your current strikers are like he may be better than what you have..Personally I think he's a great signing on a free to Leicestar and I wish you and Vassel and Sven all the best.
bluemoondays - Interesting analysis.
villa fan in peace...First - thanks! You took Curtis Davies and got some use out of him at the weekend and he did ok, that's good for you, him and us.Second, Vassell. Really pleased to see this news. I followed his infamous blog in Turkey, he was treated poorly and was honest himself that he had not tried hard enough at times and struggled, but he tried to put it right. He admitted his stock had sunk at a time clubs were cutting back on wages and was realistica that his future was difficult. So I'm delighted he got this chance. Most villa fans will regard him well, he had a great partnership with Angel for a few years. He did ok at Man City too. His England goal scoring record was very good. So why is he not doing better you may ask? I guess a bit of bad fortune, but also his technique is not the best. I think though that at 30 he can get back to his best as he's avoided major injuries. He's a great lad, a midlander, a settled family guy, I think he has all the tools to be a big success and judging on the additions of Naughton, Vassell and Davies - it looks like Erikkson could prove a few critics wrong.Good luck to you this season at Leicester, I wish you do well.
... nice one surreyvillan, appreciate the comments.. got fingers crossed here that Sven is as good as his CV can suggest, seems to have brought in the right people, and quickly, just need Roberts now to help us score a boat load of goals 'cause that's the only way we're going to start climbing up the league... good luck to Villa this season, without MoN I thought you may have a bit of a tough time... seems it's not been too bad eh?...

Why are we raving about Jason Roberts when we all know he is useless?Ishmael Miller will win us promotion!!
I seem to remember his top attribute being pace, I just hope at the ripe old age of 30, he still has that blistering pace. He could be a very good signing. CheersCallum
I'm really excited about the signings. Davies and Naughton have been awesome in their 1st 2 matches. There were a lot of critics when we taken on Sven but I honestly think this guy is going to do the business for us. I won't get carried away but sofar he has been a breath of fresh air.He has fixed the right back problem with perhaps the best right back now in the Championship? He's got Hobbs a real partner at Centre Back in Curtis Davies who hasn't hit it off with Villa yet but didn't he cost them £11m a while back? Now he's adding some real pace and international experience to the attack. The only thing that bothers me is the amount of players Sousa was allowed to sign. I bet a few are surplus already!
