Thoughts on the evening?

Scottish Premier Scotland
comment on the article

Just wondering what everyone thinks of the game and performance tonight.

These are my thoughts and i know some may agree and some may disagree

Personally that is a performance i'm much more happy to be associated with as a Scotland fan. never say die. No fear and actually played some nice stuff at times. Obviously Spain had their chances at times but with the way we set up then that was to be expected. I'm disappointed at how Spain scored their 3 goals as all were avoidable. First one Whittaker never jumped on the original cross. Second one a bit lucky with the break of the ball and the 3rd for centre half of McManus' experience to misjudge a cross like that was a disgrace. Well done on both goals 2 super balls across.

Personally delighted with everyone except Whittaker tonight and happy with the way we played and i feel the result was a bit harsh for the effort we put in. If only we can set up to play like that and attempt to play like that every game because we will not lose much playing like that every game.

Just wondering what everyone else thinks.

SpanishJohn, you clearly have no idea of the difference between the two teams we saw tonight. Did you not expect players like Iniesta, Villa, Silva and Alonso to make the back four and midfield look ordinary for much of the match.

Definitely much happier than Friday night. Levein needs to trust his players to be able to take on sides away from home as well. There is some quality in the side.

Spain are deserved World and European champions and many other teams have struggled against them so it was clearly a good, passionate performance from Scotland. It is important that the team doesnt get carried away with tonight and they should be focused on winning their home games in 11 months time. 9 points from the games at home and away to liechtenstein can't be out of Scotlands reach can it?

Am I missing something here?
Are we not supposed to collect points so we can take part in the Euros 2012?
Why are so many people happy with that game?

Having read and heard about the 4-6-0 formation for the previous game I decided to watch the Spain out of curiosity. I was pleasantly surprised to see chances created and taken. It was a match they could have won. I am pleased that the players have the talent to make a major final but I think they are being badly managed.

I think we should be realistic - there is certain amount of tu*d polishing going on with regards to this performance.

The defence was awful. McManus hasn't got a clue how to defend crosses, Whitaker was shocking and Weir is too old to cope with the physciality. Villa should have had a hat-trick by the time Spain won the penalty and only McGregor (magnificent performance) kept us in it in the second half. The goals we conceded were all down to basic errors on crosses (like in the Czech game) - how many times are we going to let this happen?

Going forward - better. Levein managed to isolate Spain's only weakness and Scotland exposed that in the second half. Bringing Adam on at half-time was an excellent move and gave us some creativity, however if we are being truly honest it was Spanish ineptitude rather than Scottish class that was the major contributing factor to us getting back into the match.

Overall - I am pleased the players showed some passion and fight but am really concerened by how fragile the defence is. I also query as to whether these players can show this fight when playing against a lesser team.

4 games played, 4 points gained - not good enough in my opinion, but the door isn't closed yet...

Four points out of a possible twelve, of which nine were well within reach. Why oh why does this manager sit back against "lesser" sides and drop points, and then ask the team do play in a more attacking mode against sides like Spain?

It all seems the wrong way round to me! In a league, you need to get the more attainable points by attacking more and scoring goals, and then see if you can smash and grab when playing superior teams.
We are now in the typical Scottish dilema of HAVING to play to win home and away. The Czechs will do what we did to them and play ultra defensively, which at Hampden is a nightmare scenario for us.
Seen it all before under numerous managers, so let's get used to watching a tournament without the Tartan Army being present.

I certainly don't believe what we have achieved so far in this group is good enough. If we had 7 points from this group so far then it would of been nice. And it's not like we can even say we have been unlucky in all the games up until now. We have got we deserved in each game excep Liechtenstein where we didn't deserve all 3.

Last night is a performance we should be quite happy with regardless of the result and hopefully it will give Levein an eye opener that when we want to have a go then we can compete with the best. Obviously I don't want to get ahead of myself like any other fan after we have seen the same thing happening time and again in the past. the last campaign was prime example of us being horse manure and then performing well against a good team in Holland. However the players are to blame for this as well. It's like when the rest of the SPL play the Old Firm. They get themselves up for it no problem. If they can find a way to get themselves up for it as much as they can for the big games against the smaller nations then we might find that they can perform better as well.

The points aren't good enough but if the manager can take forward that maybe if we have a go like that for the rest of this group then we might get second place yet.

Adam should have been on from the start. Made a difference. Defence poor apart from McGregor.

What a surprise; Spain played exactly as they did in the World Cup i.e. boring pretty stuff, constant diving, playacting & demands to officials that Scottish players be yellow or red carded. Sickening.

Levein calls his players "heroes". Get a life! This is just a football game. Heroes are firefighters, law enforcement people, military who protect our freedoms, doctors, nurses, teachers, scientists who find cures for diseases etc. etc.

This "heroes" garbage is just an effort to deflect attention from the fact that Scotland lost again!

Actually your 1000% WRONG Globaled. These footballers are much bigger heroes than military?!? I wouldn't call killing innocent people and destroying other countries in the name of capitalism very heroic. Firefighters, yes I can agree with, doctors, perhaps on occasion when they help and don't just prescribe addictive prescriptions that make the problem worse. But police? hmm, footballers are far bigger heroes and less thuggish, which says something about out corrupt system. Don't underestimate the heroics of a footballer, they may get paid too much but at least they're not hurting anyone. Well, in most cases.

Hey Up,
Enjoyed your very "in-depth, philisophical comment". Don't come down too hard on the military. It is because of these brave men and women that you have the FREEDOM to make such comments without fear of retribution! If a few terrorists happen to get in the way, so be it! They were probably Rangers fans anyway!

Most of these football players are over-paid, under performing prima donnas, not heroes. yikes

Without the military, today you might be working 20 hours a day in a communist coal mine. Or worse still, you might have been forced to become a Man. U supporter. Have a good day! biggrin
