I am surprised how low New Zeland are ranked. Remember they were the only unbeaten team out of 32. Does not seem fair.

England are above average, think the table isn't lying. 32 teams, half of 32 is 16, England were 13th, that's about right.

The rankings mean pretty much nothing really so much ado about nothing. That said, I think that England are a poor TEAM. We have fantastic players but Fabio don't get the most out of them, play them in their best positions or seem to motivate them to want to become champions. With not much coming through in the way of talent, ageing players past their best, watch us slip down the rankings with Fabio in charge. We will struggle to qualify for Euro 2012 unless Fabio seriously gets his act together.

Players I think that should now be blooded into the full squad are: Smalling, Cahill, Zamora (bit old but much better than the Heskey option), Adam Johnson, Wilshere, Gosling. I'm not talking about first team action but get them involved, bring them on, get them experienced ready for the next tournament. Get rid of the dead wood in Upson, SWP, Heskey, maybe even Gerrard/Lampard, Johnson etc. But play a formation that suits the players and don't just chuck a good midfielder in and play them in their least favoured position! Pick a balanced team and play to people's strengths!

I think getting rid of Pearce was a very bad thing. He's been there, done it, got the T-Shirt and some of the players could do with just an ounce of his passion! Fabio is taking us down the wrong path...we will end up worse than with Mclaren!

So Beckham's major contribution against quality opposition was a penalty against Argentina.

Waohh, I am bowled over with admiration. If thats the best you can do in 115 Internationals, it just about sums up Beckham's International career.

Failed to deliver!

Harry 0 - excellent post, agree with that!!

Only thing I'd say about the English players being tired, slow, out-of-sorts - that's true. But it can't be because of the long EPL season and the players extended seasons in the Champions League/FA Cup, etc. Only the Chelsea players were in the FA cup, and they ALL got knocked out of Champions in the quarter-finals!! So the SEASON excuse for "tiredness" doesn't add up - they actually had "extra" time off!

I think the players are not looking after themselves physically, mentally, etc. OFF the field. They were uninspired and lacked passion. They're too rigid, and prone to self-sabotage/sulking and passive-aggressive attitudes when they don't get to play, get substituted or are asked to play outside of their favourite position. Of course, it makes sense to play someone where their strength lies, but in international - especially world cup contests - tactics change and you have to be adaptable, flexible and professional enough to play outside your normal "comfort zone" for the good of the team. That's where mental fitness and preparedness comes in - on and off the field.

That's the point England completely missed this year. They were mentally ill-prepared for the biggest tournament in the world.

The basic story is rubbish - the "journalist" obviously dosen't understand statistics 13/32 is better then 11/16.

I'd rather be ranked 1st out of 2 than 2nd out of 4

I think that Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, Terry, Cole, Barry, Lennon are all quality players and although prone to the odd gaffe, David James is too. Let's face it, we cruised through qualifying with the same players so what happened when we got to the finals? Rooney was clearly still suffering from injury, Cole's head wasn't right from his off the field activities, we know Lampard and Gerrard can't seem to play together and we stuck Upson and King in with Terry when as a partnership, they'd not really had a run in the team. Preparation was poor, we relied on Rooney too much and didn't have a plan B. Where was Crouch? He's got like 1 goal in every 2 games so why wasn't he brought on when we needed goals? Beckham was a loss as there's nobody in an an England jersey who puts in a performance and cares as much as him, still. He has quality delivery and that's what we were missing. We tried to go through the middle too much.

I love England, I'm passionate about my country but I have to say in the 30 years or so I've followed football, I've never seen such a poor England team. Add a zero onto our WC rank, we should have been 130th out of 32! smiley
