World Cup live - day 18

World Cup
comment on the article

Here ye! Here ye! Come hither to discuss the fall-out from England's disastrous last 16 defeat to Germany, bringing to an end their disastrous World Cup campaign in South Africa.

Where does English football go from here? Should Capello, as one newspaper suggests, FABIGO?

And once it's all off our collective chests, we've got the soothing balm of Netherlands against Slovakia (KO at 15:00 BST) before Brazil take on Chile (19:30 BST) for a place in the quarter-finals...

The Dutch have pushed Brazil close over the years in previous World Cups. This time around Brazil haven't really been pushed thus far, but neither have the Netherlands.

Should make for an interesting match - the Dutch have gone under the radar a bit and have another gear left in them. In the end I would bet Brazil (solely for their attacking prowess) but it's no sure thing.

Fabio needs to do the honorable thing and resign - not hold out to maximise his payout.
Appoint Redknapp.
We should scrap league cup - or have it as a div 3/4 competition (and scrap all the other mickey mouse cups)
We should limit non-English players in any team to 5 - yes I include the Scots and Welsh - we can't have our cake (4 country teams) and eat it.
Finally, and this is radical - England players should play for England for no fees. What say you?

Am I the only one who thinks Japan are one of the worst teams to qualify for the 2nd round, can't understand these comments about them being an exciting team at all.

They had 2 players booked for time wasting in the 1ST HALF against Denmark. They only look capable of scoring from set plays (admittedly great goals v Denmark)and if Denamrk had an actual striker not the ancient Tomasson and the inept Bendtner up front Japan would be at home now.

Paraguay to win in a dull game, Japan won't even remotely look like scoring.

Re Gary O'Sullivan

Shut up you mug!

Redknapp has NEVER managed in the Champions League, and yes he won the FA Cup, but Portsmouth only beat a Championship team in the semis and Final and he bankrupted them in the process. People also forget he was in charge when Southampton went down.

He regularly spends large amounts of money to achieve success, can't do that for England. Also, while everyone bashes the 4-4-2 he plays it religiously.

Last 2 english managers - Keegan and McClaren, enough said.

Stick with Capello we have no chance of getting anyone better

I think it will be fitting if the Dutch win this worldcup as they were the first to discover and land in South Africa back in the 1650's,Table Bay to be exact

And if a team gets kicked out of the Champions league they should NOT get into the Europa cup - it just makes the latter a "losers" cup

I think its time to get rid off the old and bring in the new. If we look back through the years we've not been successful and even at Italia 90 we stumbled through to the semi finals. New manager, new players and new mentality

Some good news though, i've seen this funny video on youtube where England did win. Check it out at

I think that to encourage players to put in their maximum effort, they should only get paid a bonus on international duties if they win / score / assist / tackle; and if they make mistakes, e.g. concede a foul, get a card (or do a rob green winkeye ) then hey should receive an extra fine.

This would encourage the players to perform, and it would give them a little extra drive to perform and to play for their country!

I think that this would actually be a good idea for the FA to implement, as it seems only logical, anyone agree?

They should be paid a working man's wage and no bonuses if they don't deliver.
They should be honoured to play for their country. If they don't like it then they can stay at home. As it is we already pay for their basic expenses so why should we pay for any other extras when they can afford to pay themselves. Their wives and girlfriends certainly do not need to be accomodated either. If the players really can not do without them then they can pay for them to stay at another hotel. Do soldiers have the same luxury? NO! and they are away for much longer periods with no guarantee of safe return or loads of cash in the bank!
