Guaranteed semi-final spot

World Cup
comment on the article

One of Uruguay, South Korea, Ghana or USA is guaranteed a spot in the semi finals, so there is the possibility of a World Cup final spot going to a team outwith the big 8 (Bra, Arg, Ger, Spa, Ita, Holl, Eng, Fra,...9 if you include Portugal)

I don't know how i feel about that, I like underdogs, but at the same time there is some comfort in the status quo.

What is everyone else's thoughts on this? Does it bring a much-needed element of the unknown to world football or do you enjoy the status quo?

Thinking about it, I wouldn't mind Uruguay taking the whole thing and adding to their previous World Cups.(Don't see that happening though)

I may be wrong on this but I think Uruguay have more South America federation cup wins than Brazil and Argentina. Can anybody confirm/correct me on that?

It's great, I love it! :)

Seriously, don't you get bored by seeing the same names up there every time? Gotta love it when teams like Denmark 1992 or Greece 2004 win big tournaments. I would very much like to see it happen in the WC. It's about time again.

Uruguay arent all that small a team.

They've won the WC twice. I know that was a long time ago but so was England's only win.

If they get thru' it wouldnt be that unexpected.

There's always an unlikely team that gets to the semis

If we were to ahve problem with one of these four teams making the semis then we are really saying why bother allowing any teams other than the top 9 to play in the first place? Every team has earned the right to play and let's not forget we could have had a South Korea - Turkey final 8 years ago(is that the right year?). The best team will win the torunament because no matter who is the best team it is who wins the matches and don;t say that is not rue because if a team domintaes for 89 minuts but can't score and the other team has one shot and scores, then the best team won as scoring is kind of the important part. The best team has to score to prove they are the best.

I think it is more with envy that we would be annoyed at the fact that the US, who even a poor England made look very average, could get to the semi's. However, Ghana and Uruguay have to be the favourites from those four as the South American teams seem to be at home in Africa and Ghana i guess even more so!

England always play better against the big teams, but also don't lose in knockout against the little teams, think about it. So fingers crossed that Chile can hold Spain and send them to the other half of the draw and that Mexico can pull the rug from under the Maradonna express train - which I think only another South American team can do due to familiarity and the good old spirit of a derby match. Germany are not good enough to beat England even on an average day - BUT - we have barely even met that standard in the last five games so we just have to wait and see.

I personally am looking forward to the Messi and Rooney floodgates to open with their first goals, just a shame that one will be gone after the quarters.

I would encourage serious football fans to bet their money on Ghana to pull through the next two rounds the least.

They are youthful side more ambitious and carry the responsibility not only of themselves but the rest of the continent on their shoulders. More importantly they play as a unit which is a great asset in any football organisational structure.
Harry Rednapp was spot on yesterday in his analysis on TV when he said England is better of playing the Germans than the Black Stars of Ghana; which no matter how you would like to underrate them are more difficult to break down.

If they are able to strenghen and polish their striking option, they would be the difficult among the underdogs to contend with

Nottingham Forest have won back to back European Cups.

Sure Uruguay look a good bet to go through NOW, but if you had bet on them reaching semis or final PRE-tournament you'd have got great odds.

I think that they should change the format a bit :

All the group winners names in one hat, all the runners-up from the group stages in another hat, and then draw one teams name from the first hat to play one team from the second and so on.

This would still give a theoretical advantage to group winners, but would do away with the predictability of the present system.
