As I expected, Argyle have signed NI international Patterson. Undisclosed as usual but I've heard a figure of 200K mentioned.

The intriguing thing is the added mystery it gives to the Mariner situation. He was certainly a player that Mariner targeted, and yet all the speculation is that he has gone back to the Staes. I believe the Mariner quote on the website is an old one about Paterson.

It must be that the deal has been on the cards for some time and it must have been at least run pass the new manager. Could this be a former NI international - Dowie? There seems to be growing speculation that he's the one the Board want despite the fact that he wants to stay living up north!

My info about who was interviewed still holds good but my contact has no updates. I assume that Dowie is possibly someone they wanted to speak to with his situation unclear at Hull and Paul Hart seeming to be in the frame up there. Given the writing is on the wall for Mariner and Carver, you have to assume Burley (who I had as favourite) is out of the picture, as it is almost certain he would have worked with his old pal Mariner and Carver. It's likely that Dowie (and Jewell and Cotterill) would want to bring in their own staff.

Personally, I feel very sorry for the way Mariner has been treated in this. Todd almost declared him to be Manager post season and then, having back tracked, came out with further statements that whoever comes in will work with him. Mariner must feel badly let down. There is no doubt of his love for Argyle and the high regard the fans have him, and I think he's certainly got something to offer. I hope he stays, even though it looks like Carver may be off to Newcastle.

Why the papers continue to run the Colin Lee story when it's clear the Board haven't even interviewed him shows what a clandestine exercise this has been by the Board - not a bad thing, but now getting rather tedious!

What's the next twist? Benitez or Sven? Or Worthington - see below

Forty goals in the Irish Premier League is a decent job done lads.

With Full Time training and playing against better opposition every week will bring Patterson on leaps and bounds.

He's the sort of striker thats in the right place at the right time and when in front of goal will put the ball in the back of the net.

Good luck to Patterson but then I want him to do well at Plymouth so he can then hopefully bag a few for Northern Ireland too ok

Glentoran FC today agreed a deal with Plymouth Argyle for the transfer of striker Rory Patterson The deal sees Patterson move to Home Park on a 2 year full time contract with the Club receiving an undisclosed fee In addition the Club will benefit from a sell on clause of any future transfer monies and have also negotiated a clause giving them first refusal on the player should he return to play football in the Irish League

Glentoran Chairman Aubry Ralph commented:- "Whilst we are obviously disappointed that we will not get to see Rory in a Glentoran Shirt The player made it very plain that he wanted the chance to pursue his dream of a full time career in cross Channel football and the Club felt it would be morally wrong to stand in his way of fulfilling that ambition We have reached an agreement with Plymouth and we wish Rory every success with his move across the water Rory wishes to place on the record his thanks to the Club for facilitating the transfer to allow him to follow his dream"

Rory is a good finisher. Certainly at Div 1 level he will bang the goals in. His record at FC United was outstanding.

Going back to the managerial situation, it's being widely tipped again today that Carver will end up back at Newcastle, but ideally with Argyle having paid up his contract so that we don't need compensating. Surely the Board can play a bit of hard ball here and at least make sure Carver doesn't walk away with a full pay off and straight into a better paid job! Still, its another situation we've created so you can't blame Carver, who showed loyalty when Burnley came in for him.

ps lots of rumours tonight, based on Patterson joining, that Worthington is in the frame. Of course Patterson has just spent the week with him in the States so you can see where it comes from.

it was well known that Worthington was keen on the sheff weds job but the irish fa finally came up with a 2 year extension to his contract, taking him through to the 2012 euros.

he is rumoured to be on 450K pa so I can't see it having any legs, unless we're tying to broker a job share? cash strapped irish fa could be quite keen on that whilst retaining yer man! personally wouldn't be keen on such an arrangement as argyle is going to be a job and a half!

It would change the record Pilgrim61. DS and associates could then moan about all the Irish wee nugets we sign instead of the Scotish ones.
