Stephen Ferris is out of the Irish summer tour. Clearly we all know this is a blow especially with the possibility of o'connell not being there either. However what i am asking is who do we think will replace him at 6 and who do we think will go on tour if kidney takes a 30 man squad

Ferris seems to be looking too much for the big hit these days. It's taking a heavy toll on him physically.

McLaughlin will undoubtedly be first choice replacement.

The other replacements will depend on how Kidney wants to use the tour. The rumours are that he wants to play his strongest team and come away with at least one test win. Cancelling the A tour is also indicative that he will take a sizeable squad and not worry too much about players utility.

Props (5)
Healy, Horan, Court, Hayes, Buckley.
Hayes on the slide is still better than Buckley, but Buckley has been given Smal's endorsement so both will travel. Can't see Ross going as he can't even get in the Leinster team.

Hookers (3)
Flannery, Best, Cronin

Locks (5)
POC, DOC, Cullen, MOD, Ryan.
Don't know if POC or Ryan will be fit but if they are close they will go. Tuohy might be called up as a replacement if not. Can't see Casey having a case(!) for inclusion as he was tried and didn't impress. The downside of a set-piece forward playing outside Ireland is that he has no time to integrate into a "tight" five.

Backrow (7)
McLaughlin, Muldoon, Wallace, Jennings, SOB, Heaslip, Henry.

Scrum halfs (3)
TOL, Reddan, Stringer
Stringer was given the IRFU contract ahead of Boss so has to be favourite.

Fly Halfs (2)
Sexton, ROG

Back five (10)
D'Arcy, BOD, Wallace, McFadden, Earls, Bowe, Trimble, Kearney, Murphy, Duffy.

So that's a squad of 35 in all - everyone could get some gametime, but keeps everyone wondering about a place in a squad of 30 next year.

McLaughlin will grow in in NZ. Its what he needs. No one will murder him. He's got the right stuff. He'll just get better from the experience.

This is a great chance to find out what our depth really is. Winning would be nice, but even more important, is using this tour to its fullest possible benefit for Ireland's Future. That would be a greater win in itself. In the long-term.

Yeah Nift, thats the problem with a nation like Ireland. We have two top class blindsides and they are both missing, so what are we going to do? Cancel the fixture? No, we just have to hope someone steps up.

Paddy Wallace may be missing as well. Add to that Paul O'Connell, Donncha Ryan, Stephen Ferris, Denis Leamy, Luke Fitzgerald and Sean O'Brien and we are seriously a lot weaker than we would want to be.

I'm a bit concerned about McLaughlin in New Zealand myself. But who's the alternative?

I'd say Henry generally has been as good as Kev this year, but he's looking tired, and has no international experience.

Sean O Brien is in the Leinster squad this weekend. As is Sexton. Great news. He (SOB) will Tour - specially if he plays the next 3 games in the ML. Id put him at Blindside ;-)

We be imaginative. Jennings at 7, Wallace at 6. Pretty easy solution methinks. Failing that we put Dan Tuohy who is a better prospect than Kev MC on the blindside.

Nah Tuohy isn't the answer. Whenever he's played there for Ulster he hasn't done very well in my opinion. Certainly not a better 6 than McLaughlin. I was thinking of Wallace 6, Jennings 7. Or O'Brien if he proves his fitness in time.

ok maybe the term I used was a bit strong, but i doubt he is international class, particularly against a traditionally ferocious pack.

Its a shame for the lad but he is starting to look a bit delicate. Another Delve, talented but prone to injury
