Would any other manager have done better?

Liverpool
comment on the article

With a NET spend in the past two seasons of just over 2m, would any other manager have done better?

We need to wise up. We have not spent any money, whilst everyone around us are spending incredible amounts, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City and Aston Villa.

This season we have achieved what we were funded to achieve. Previous seasons we have overachieved.

So either say something constructive and positive, or don't say anything at all.

I think there is a problem on here in that the perception seems to be if you think Rafa should go it's because you think he is an idiot, and if you think he should stay its because you are a member of the IRWT brigade who think he can do no wrong.
I would like to firmly position myself in the middle.

Rafa is clearly a very good manager. His record speaks for itself. He has bought some real quality players and on occasion has demonstrated tactical nous.

At the same time, something has clearly gone wrong this season. Much of this lies with the players, several of whom have underperformed (Carragher, Gerrard, Johnson and Agger). The fact remains that many of these are his players and he has spent money on players and got very little out of them (Gonzalez, Kromkamp, Aquilani, Keane). With such an apparently small amount of money available (if one takes the net spend figures at face value), it makes it all the more important that the players that the manager signs are the right ones, and unfortunately, too many of them have been found wanting. At the same time, Rafa has, in my view, on too many times got it wrong (why play 8 defensive players against Portsmouth).I also think we look stale and bereft of ideas, we almost always play the same way (whereas Chelsea and Man Utd do seem to vary it more) and at times look like we are going through the motions. Some of the players clearly look like they are going through the motions and the manager, is responsible for getting them motivated.
I think Rafa Benitez is also looking like he has had enough. Good managers can run out of ideas and not be able to take the club further. I think it may be best for a clean break, for him to go off to Juve (where I am sure he will do well, and for Liverpool to get a manager who can take us forward.

Many thanks Rafa for Istanbul and all your hard work. But I think it's time for a fresh start.

"Still doesn't discount that Liverpool would get more out of him if they played him with a bigger striker to take the battering EPL centre-halfs dish out - which is my point
------------------------
Do you have any data that shows bigger strikers suffer from fewer injuries?"

No I don't its based on opinion just as your arguements are but i feel Torres would benefit from it and would make him a better player. Lets face it Liverpool definately have no other striker in the squad good enough to be considered a top player.

BTW - If you wants stat look at the league table or maybe you would prefer to look at Liverpool's loan debt.

An opinion based on your extensive coaching experience no doubt?

your opinion? So you could be talking complete balls?

"your opinion? So you could be talking complete balls?"

Torres is injured again.
Liverpool's only back-up is Ngog.
Its Liverpool's worst league finish since the 98-99 season.

Now you can write that down on a bit of paper, pass it to Rafa and he can read it out in one of his FACT rants.

I don't buy into the big striker arguement. Torres' injuries haven't been caused by this, and it wouldn't stop defenders 'letting him know they're there'.

What he would benefit from is another good striker in the squad to allow him to recover properly from injuries and be rested now and then.

And yes, I know the same can be said of Rooney, but at least we tried!

Sure we've had a bad season but we've not finished 13th as Fergie did, nor 17th as Moyes did!
-----------------------------

This is a typical Liverpool fan comeback and one which shows why so many are still happy with Rafa. What has that stat got to do with anything? Why compare yourself to United 2 decades ago and Everton? Surely this should be about Liverpool's expectations and the needs of the club.

Or is it ok to bomb and finsih 7th because once upon a time Man Utd did the same?

--------------------

Haha! Good reply Frodo! We (United) used to play outside the top division so Liverpool will never be as bad as us by this guy's logic (unless they keep Rafa!).

What a stupid comment that was to make. Another Liverpool fan bringing history into it when it's completely irrelevant, but sadly all they have now! smiley

Rafa is only a good manager when it comes down to Europe. He doesn't seem to care about any domestic cups and I think he has wasted money on players when it always comes down to Steven Gerrard in the end to pull Liverpool through. It's time he went, any other manager would have gone years ago
