Messi v Rooney:Who is better in all honesty

Premier League Manchester United
comment on the article

I know Wayne Rooney is playing out of his skin this season and is the inform Striker of the world but who do you think is the better player Wayne Rooney or Lionel Messi?

Having seen Messi tonight score a hat-trick and also win a penalty for his side I had to affirm my opinion he is un-matched in the world

Who do you vote for?

If you respond to this article with a biased argument you're simply not being honest with oneself,Lionel Messi is simply the best, the finesse, touch and dribble is simply marvellous, his finishing is meticulous and extraordinary in comparison to Rooney.Truth be told,Messi is the best ever footballer folks.

How can this be classed as a debate when there is clearly no debating necessary. Most of the English media think Rooney is the best (there are some that are not so biased). Every other media knows the truth. Here is an article from the Guardian.

First of all, someone said C. Ronaldo and Kaka are "greats." No they're not. Not yet. And I doubt Kaka will get there, and C. Ronaldo will get there after much crying and whining and flopping about on the ground.

Messi is a different player than Rooney so comparisons can't accurately be made. Anyone who has actually PLAYED football knows this and will agree that the point I just made settles the debate.

Messi is a more complete player than Rooney, though. Messi is a more complete player than both C. Ronaldo and Kaka. In fact, Messi is a more complete player than most everyone else. He can defend, attack, he's a left footed inside forward who plays on the right, he has better ball control than anyone that comes to mind, etc etc etc. And he plays for Barca, a club which no doubt has more respect, honor and tradition than Real Madrid and Man U, making him that much more eligible, IMO, to be a "great" and a "legend." He is the best player alive.

Rooney though, is fantastic. But he's a striker. He's not Messi.

it would be interesting if Barcelona and MU agreed to swap Rooney and Messi for a year. I am sure that Barca had enough reasons to refuse but if they'd agree to it MU fans should start building an altar because there'd be nothing they could do but worship ET Messi.

This question should not even be asked. It is an insult to Messi. There is no comparison between a Leonardo 'cartoon' and Tom and Jerry.

A quick point on this article. Without question, Lionel Messi (in my opinion) is the best player in the world at the moment. A phenomenally gifted footballer, but the greatest player in the world debate often changes year and year based on performance (see Ronaldo v Messi last year) However, Wayne Rooney is right up there but needs a few more years at the performance level of this season. However, it irks me when people say that Lionel Messi is the GREATEST PLAYER EVER! He's not even the best Argentinian or even South American player ever (Maradonna or Pele anyone?). You can't be the greatest player ever based on 2 seasons. Both of the aforementioned players won World Cups for their countries, and were consistently good for a huge proportion of their careers. I have no doubt that Lionel Messi has the potential, but wait at least 10 years and two more world cups before even making that comparison.

Do United fans own TVs or read papers?

Loads of posts here talking about selling Rooney and BUYING others. What with?

United brought in 286 million last year and made a loss, Liverpool 186 million and made a loss. It all goes on the interest on the debt.

In short, United could not "buy" anyone at all.

How long is it going to take for some to understand that? Do United need to be at the high court as well?
