Paris-Nice - 7th-14th March

Road cycling
comment on the article

In the same way as the Omloop feels like the start of the Classics season, Paris-Nice always feels for me like it's the first real stage race of the year. I've been getting shivers thinking of this week - Paris-Nice *and* Tirreno Adriatico at the same time.

Now, I'm not the one with enough knowledge to tell you the history of the race, or why it's so exciting - but the official website is more than happy to:

www.letour.fr/us/homepage_ho...

And the full startlist is here: www.letour.fr/2010/PNC/RIDER... but the big highlight is Alberto Contador taking to the road with the 2010 iteration of Astana...

BritWatchers, look out for Dan Lloyd in Cervélo, David Millar leading the Garmin team, and Steve Cummings & Geraint Thomas for Sky.

Of course, given that this is an ASO race, for the teams without automatic entry to the TdF, this is a chance to demonstrate why they need to be there - so hopefully that's mean lots of The Crazy from all our favourite underdog teams, as well as Sky and Radioshack needing to underline their appropriateness. Got to say, my eyebrows are raised by Garmin's squad, as remembering gs girl's run-down of the teams' successes last year, Garmin feel to me to be one of the more vulnerable squads, despite their ProTour status.

There's coverage all week on Eurosport and E/sport 2, but it's sporadic, and we all know it's likely to change, so check the schedules:
tv.eurosport.co.uk/

So exciting!

And then have 19 more of them (including 2 mountain TTs) before the ceremonial ride into the finish.
................
Uphill, I hope?

I thought I might be nice actually, and give them a big descent.

I don't really know Pigeons, but thanks for thinking of me.

I should be able to put a bike on rollers by this weekend. I'd sold an old and bought a new just before the accident, and that's arriving on Thursday.

The worst thing is my head. Apparently concussion can leave you very emotional! Tears, sadness etc for no reason.

I'm going to try a very short ride on Saturday if the weather allows, and make sure that i go with friends as I'm sure I'll be nervous a anything!

Urbs...are you trying to commit mass murder! Having said that, I'd be all for getting the sprinters atages over and done with in week 1, and then always finishing with an ITT or even TTT into Paris.

At least then we could have suspense right up until the end, and it would force the Schleck boys to do something about TTing!

Poor you - and the emotional thing could also the post-traumatic shock stuff?

Good luck going riding. My mate's been recomended the cycling confidence courses that happen here - as Bristol's a cycling city, we get them for a fiver or something, but apparently they're great, if only for reminding you you know 1,000 times more!

(She was knocked off bike before Xmas, turns out the continuing pain isn't from dislocated knee, it's lots of microscopic fractures to her tibia, which hasn't been improved by walking around on it as advised by A&E doctor....)

Both the GP and the Specialist said that's what is happening.

It puts me at ease understanding that it is post traumatic stuff.

I still feel a bit of an idiot within myself because I'm suffering from this thing that war veterans get, and then not all of them!

It's not doing my macho pride any good I can tell you. Sitting around eating and crying! I'm like a pregnant woman!

I just hope I snap out of this before my wife's time of month comes round. if not, our children are going to have a very confusing couple of weeks!

"Dad, why are you and Mum both crying...it's only The Bridges of Madison County!"

On another tack, what was it you are riding at the moment? A friend of mine has just bought a hybrid, and it set me off thinking about your bike.

You mentioned it when talking about your barge trip with Mum in summer.

Ha! I'd *love* to be a fly on the wall in the LSR-household when that happens - esp if both of you are like me, and prone to weeping over the most insane things when the (hormone-induced) mood takes me - I've been known to cry over "Neighbours", and I'm not allowed to forget that!

I've got a kona dew at the mo', which I got in the autumn on the work scheme thingy, but I have a really embarrassing confession - I've not been on it since December. Well, it was the snow, and then the wrong kind of work, and then I had the 606 virus for all of February, but if you want the truth, I'm freaked out about riding in the city since my mate's accident, and a couple of other friends having near-misses. I usually give up for mid-winter, but I should be back on it by now. In my defense I am carrying a ridiculous amount of stuff at the moment, but still, I need to get off the sofa and start riding again.

And now I've admitted that, I'm going to HAVE to ride to work tomorrow!

I used to have a Giant hybrid, but it was a girl's bike, so weighed about a tonne and a half. I haven't got used to how to stop on a normal bike yet - years of no crossbar makes it *very* strange to get used to having one there....

>>>The last week of the Vuelta was slightly trashed by the fact half the peloton had gone... hence Millar winning the TT, etc

I think that's being rather harsh on Miller, he was 2nd in the earlier TT to Spartacus, he just stayed around to take advantage of Spartacus leaving early. There's no shame in being 2nd to Fab in the TT stakes.

No, I know that really, it's just that he said he deliberately wasn't going to the Worlds TT because no one could beat Fab, and just as it's no shame to come 2nd to Fab, it also means something else to win when Fab's not there - he's just *that* dominant. It's private joke with myself because earlier in the year when I said DM hasn't had any major results since he came back, someone pointed at winning that Vuelta stage as an example of good results, which made me laugh.

Maybe it's just like sprinting against Hoy on the track - coming second id the real first, because it's like juniors riding against Pros or something!

LSR - I missed the background on the accident. did you have an operation at all? I wonder because the rollercoaster you're on can be brought on by being under a general.

it's chemical engineering which will fix itself I'm sure, like a broken bone is mechanical engineering.

you're clearly heading in the right direction by getting on with rollers etc rather than twiddling with your navel.

it was a great day yesterday, best of the year so far. got another sportive, the VO2 in kent, in 2 weeks then flanders on easter w/end which I'm feeling a little nervous about.

you take care ok? reads as if we're all rooting for you smiley

LSR, if you're there, I was just moved to cry at Glee... I blame you for mentioning hormonal stuff while I'm in that mood!
