Federer out of Dubai

He's out of Dubai with a lung infection apparently and should be back within two weeks.

I find this pretty sad, I was looking forward to seeing him back in action and this tournament is one of his favourites. Let's hope he's back on top for Indian Wells and Miami!

Robredo will be replacing him in his place in the draw.

But you know what I think about points to defend, it's not as important as points you can earn.
==========================
Depends on how many points you have to start with.

Failure to defend loses points and its not always possible for "new" points to exist as Fed will have to deal with at RG/Wimby.

He defends 360 at both IW and Miami.

Agree with Duggie. He should be building a very comfortable cushion before RG begins, thats for sure.

Then again, he loves slams and you have to question yourself whether he'd really do THAT bad at both to lose those many points? Possible but very unlikely. Not dismissing injuries etc of course.

He would drop 720 then and Djoko could earn an extra 1220 I believe by winning both IW and Miami. So he is unlikely to lose his spot at number 1...then he could be fresh for the clay season and increase his margins there.

Tenez - what I have said is totally true.

If he doesnt play IW he will lose 360 ranking points.

If he does play the maximum new points are 640 - curtailed by his previous performance.

You add new points ON, but have to take old points OFF.

There are NO "differential" new points available at RG/Wimby and if he fails to defend the title(s) the points would go DOWN. smiley

You really want to go that route, don't you?

Yes what you say is right, but whatever happens, he is going to lose all the points, (FO, Wimby, you name it). They will just be replaced with the new ones. Isn't it?

Hope neither of you goes there coz this is showing signs of being very complicated very unnecessarily.

Basically what Duggie is saying is A is for Apple and what you are saying Tenez is A for Ambience. Right now, I feel I am quite hungry so I'd go with Duggie winkeye

Yes and the old ones drop OFF at the same time - so we are always looking at the "Differential" as far as rolling ranking points are concerned.

And of course other players are all doing the same - so it becomes a DIFFERENTIAL used in juxtaposition to the results of others.

Last years RG/Wimby ilustrates this to perfection with a Fed/Nadal comparison.

Nadal "lost" 3820 points from his TOTAL and Fed gained a NET 1600 on his TOTAL. smiley

Its very simple - NEW points REPLACE OLD points - the DIFFERENTIAL applies to the TOTAL points in a 52 weeks rolling system.

Fed would gain 1000 points by winning IW - but "at the same time" would lose 360 from the previous year - NET gain 640.

Just listened to the interview - broadband seems to be behaving itself today!

I don't like the sound of this particularly, I must say. I think you can hear the indrawn breath or wheeze when Federer speaks.

Hope it doesn't reawaken the GF.

What a pity, just when he seemed to be back in sorts.
