What are Farah's chances of beating Bekele?

Britain's Mo Farah is racing Ethiopia's three-time Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele in Birmingham on 20 February.

Farah has struggled in his recent races but after training in Kenya will be in a confident frame of mind.

Does he have any hope against Bekele in next Saturday's Aviva Grand Prix at the National Indoor Arena?

I would be pretty shocked if Farah challenges Bekele (who in my eyes has already earned the title of greatest distance runner of all time - sorry Geb fans!) but it is undeniable that he was a long way from his best in Edinburgh. It will be interesting to see what sort of shape he has got into since then.

What are some of you idiots talking about, calling Farah a no hoper. He's been around the best in Europe for a few years, just Bekele is one of the best ever. Farah has a chance, it's just a very small one.

Paps - Geb has progressed distance running more than anyone, records in so many distances, was unbeatable for a decade, and is still setting marathon world records at his age. Bekele has perhaps passed him as a 5k and 10k runner but not as a distance runner.

it's a good laugh when the football boys take a wander onto other boys, must be bored of the racist, homophobic and generally offensive chat that dominates the football world.

I guess it's a slow news day over there

"Bekele has perhaps passed him as a 5k and 10k runner but not as a distance runner."

- I don't think this is a fair call. If he's passed him as a 5k and 10K runner, which he has; add to that his cross-country record; then he's passed him as a distance runner. To require something else, such as moving up to the marathon as well, would be gerrymandering your criteria.

If bekele runs a world class marathon (which I think he will) then that will only cement him as the greatest distance runner of all time. Haile's reluctance to race in the marathon instead going for world records makes him a bit lesser than bekele who attacks with a vicious kick to demolish his opponents!

But FH, your right. Football fans in general have no idea about how much dedication it takes to run like Farah. That's why these guys are on here with their stupid remarks about him being a no hoper.

Who do we all think will win the world cross? Kenyas martin mathathi ran a smoking 9.8km in the Chiba ekkiden, 25:55. Equates to a world road record 10k!

Anyway, good luck mo!

This is exactly it. I regard myself as being fairly talented with my times, but what guys like Farah do are out of this world. It's so fast.

Dj, your right. When mo was coming second in the euro cross, I had it on at my parents house. My mum said "he looks like he is jogging". Then I told her exactly how fast he was running.

You could get 100 people off the street and you'd be lucky if one of them could sprint a lap at Farahs race pace. I'm like you dj, I consider myself a talented club athlete, but the difference is so big it's unreal.

Felix - I guess I give Haile a lot of credit for what he has done at the marathon, and to a lesser extent a lot of the more unconventional distances.
