As a Liverpool fan and a follower of most sports I wish to extend my congratulation to Ryan Giggs on becoming the 2009 BBC Sport Personality Ward winner.
Throughly deserved , to a man who is a credit to himself, his family , football club and country. Well done.

I am disappointed about the comments that Jenson Button had to sit in the car an point it displays an utter ignorance of what is required to drive such a beast. How many of the sportsmen considered to cope with the amazingly quick reactions that are required to drive a Formula 1 car.

It deserves respect.

What, compared to the complex matter of mastering the aero dynamics of throwing a dart three paces at a piece of cork board?

I'm currently 22 and my favourite player for as long as i can remember has been Ryan Giggs. Not only is he one of the most talented players of his generation, he is part of the dying breed of gents who still play the beautiful game as it should be played. Not out every night on the tiles, punching other Scoucers (Mr Gerrard) or beating his team mates with golf clubs (Mr Bellamy).

"Sports Personality of the Year" doesn't mean who is the biggest lad out there (or lets face it - Drogba would have won for shouting what we were all thinking after the Barca game). It should be about demonstrating genuine personality traits that kids these days can look up to - which Giggs has in spades. Not only has he stuck at the club that brought him through the ranks for his entire career and never once offended anyone, he has trained harder than anyone else to get to the absolute top of his game - and he's got the medals to prove it.

I salute you Giggsy, the name I had on my first united shirt was yours and my latest shirt says the same thing. What higher praise can I give?

Ps. Button is a ledge - close runner up

If its so easy to play darts you go and win the world title 14 times.

Going to the point about Button needing the skill to drive the car and the other sportspeople not being able to do it, by the same token, Button and Giggs would be nowhere near Taylor if they had game of darts. As I have said before, Whether or not you 'think' its a sport, the fact of the matter is that it is, and nobody in sport comes anywhere near to taylor with regards to titles won. He has dominated the SPORT for 20 yeasr and has never had any recognition.

It is an award to the sportsperson "whose actions have most captured the public's imagination" (its official decription).

It isn't to recognise World Champions, Cup or medal winners or World Record holders.

Henry Cooper won it twice, not because he was World Champion (he never was), but because he "captured the public's imagination", as evidenced by him gaining the most votes on two occasions.

Things like this aren't based on the number of people who disagree with the result, but are simply based on the respective totals of people who voted FOR a candidate or contender.

Button may be a "ledge" to some motor racing fans but he was undone by Giggs.

giggs should never have won this award, its a disgrace and makes a mockery of teh whole thing. he hasnt done much. the award should have gone to a real personality like jenson button

How has Taylor never had any recognition? He is recognised the world over for being the best darts player in the world... ever.

But if someone was a twenty time world ten pin bowling champion they still wouldn't be voted SPOTY.

by no recognition I am abviously meaning by Sports Personality. But its not just about winning like many others have said, its about being a sports personality. Without looking it up I dont think many people could name a 10 pin bowler, but most people know Phil Taylor. And to add to his personality aspect, 2 of his better friends are Ricky Hatton and Freddie Flintoff.

Sports Personality in the last 20 years has never even mentioned him, and its probably because they are so bitter about him playing for the PDC on SKY rather than the BDO on the BBC.

“Button may be a "ledge" to some motor racing fans but he was undone by Giggs.”

He was NOT undone by Giggs - he was undone by the press and the mindless.

Re - Taylor. If he is such a force in his sport then he should have recognition. Unfortunately the football masses rule the voting. That is why I don’t value the award and have no time for it.

I think Giggs only got the award because of the sympathy for him as he nears retirement. A token award for services rendered, not performance.

In that case the sensible option is wait for his retirement, and give him a lifetime recognition award, which I would be happy for him to accept. He has won the main award this year for doing nothing extra as far as I can see from the other 20 years.
