Monday's gossip column

by Paul Fletcher (U1816326) 16 November 2009
comment on the article

Not exactly loads of transfer gossip in Monday's papers - the headlines are dominated by the latest international action.

Nonetheless, there are a few bits and pieces kicking around.

Chelsea have been linked with Brazilian wonderkid Lucas Piazon, Egypt's Amr Zaki could be on his way back to the Premier League and Newcastle are keeping tabs on a young Portugal player.

Would you like to see Zaki back? And have you ever heard of Piazon?

All thoughts welcome.

Manchester United defender Gary Neville has called for an elite pool of referees to take charge of high-profile Premier League fixtures. - The Times ok

I expect Sir Alex has his short list already drawn up.

Another Brazilian wonderkid described as the next superstar. How many of them actually do turn out to be the next so and so.

I'd like to see Zaki back, i think he has some unfinished business in the EPL.

Am I alone in finding Ferguson and Neville absolutely unbearable? For decades, quite literally, all football fans have known and been resigned to the fact that United get 'the rub of the the green' either through the buckling of referees to their collective will, the sheer aggression of their players and manager or the the pervasive myth of their innate right to win. Sometimes, in our barmier moments, we might even attribute their luck to supernatural intervention( remember John Terry slipping AND hitting the woodwork??)- they are not called the Red Devils for nothing! Back in the real world,it was always a good crack to while away the time over a pint to ask a United fan the last occasion when he felt his team had been hard done by - you know the kind of thing: the key player gets sent off in error and the game turns, the ball hits both posts and rolls to safety, the ref. awards a bizarre penalty against your team in the last seconds - in other words, the kind of misfortune every other club suffers on a WEEKLY basis. Not United! The fan will sit there stroking his chin, unable to think of even one such occasion, however hard he tries to show that he feels aggrieved. On the contrary, United always seemed to be the beneficiaries of their opponents' misfortunes! So it is sickening to hear Ferguson turn on Wiley when only two weeks earlier the same man had been his fourth official pal, patting him on the back and joking as Owen's shot hit the net in the 96th minute of the derby, while Wiley shooed Hughes away! And nobody, to this day, will EVER know how United took three points from Arsenal in the previous home game. Injustice, as ever, gave United all six points against these rivals. So, how can we bear to listen to the whining of this dreadful pair especially when we consider the particular complaints - Wiley's lack of fitness (proved to be utter nonsense)and Fletcher's foul that gave a free kick that led to a goal. Gary, it doesn't need aan "ELITE" referee to see that he nearly took Cole's legs off! But I guess that these pathetic complaints will pay off in the end. Fans of other clubs know that, for all the huffing and puffing of the referees, the temptation to ignore the 93rd minute offside 'goal' at Old Trafford will prove preferable to being screamed at by seventy six thousand red, angry faces.

Did anyone else read that as Chelsea want Lucas (of Liverpool fame)?.

Zaki in the prem wouldnt be a bad thing, saw him against Algeria - took his goal well and played well.

That's Clattenberg pencilled in for Liverpool's next visit to Old Trafford, then...

Why would Ferguson select Clattenberg to officiate at Anfield?

It's unfortunate, that referees are now responsible for MU lost.
Home elite referees are not good enough.
International ones should be better.
Like the one that was at Chelsea vs. Barcelona.

It's called a joke. With the amount of thought you've put into your nickname, I would've thought you'd recognise one of those. Sadly, no.

Richard (U5494855)

It was also a reference to my previous comment about Ferguson picking the "elite" referees himself.

You make reference to my chosen name. I shall return the compliment:
You would have been more accurate using the shortened version of your current name.
Then add the prefix 'tiny' or 'arrogant' which would inject a bit of accuracy to match your sunny disposition.
