<<Scott is a really great player>>

Sorry???? No, he isn't. He's a very talented player who's some way short of realising his maximum potential.

Great is Nicklaus, Watson, Palmer, Vardon, Faldo, Woods, Player, Hagen, Sarazen etc etc.
..........................

You do realise the word "great" can be used in other contexts?

Obviously I didn't mean in in the context of all-time great. I suggest you check out all the definitions in a dictionary before you throw all of your toys out of your pram again.

Christ some people can be so pedantic on here.

Del Potro, I take it you missed the absolute carnage I created the other week when I said recommending square headed drivers for all high handicappers constituted a bizarre statement!

Unfortunately I missed that one.

Perhaps the clubface is a different shape, and that everyone knows this apart from you and I.

Potro

Who's throwing their toys?? Pots and kettles my son. I am fed up to the back teeth with anyone and everyone being "great" these days. They are not.

"Scott is a really great player" - what _other_ meaning of the word "great" were you expecting me to interpret it as?

Oh dear. Defensive AND patronising!!! laugh

NBS, I'd recommend you check out the following website: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/great

Have a look at adjective definitions #13 & #14. (perhaps even #9 too, as he's the biggest name in Australian golf at present).

I'd advise you to think before jumping to conclusions next time. Ok, "son"? (See, I can be patronising too)

Now please stop being a numbskull. Thanks.

The thick/coarse Juan Martin Del Potro eats GOATS for breakfast. Fact.

laugh You really should be careful what sources you quote old fellow. I refer you to your Free Dictionary link:

[Middle English grete, from Old English gréat, thick, coarse.]

As for your quotation of definitions 9, 13 and 14. 9 is irrelevant (I seriously doubt if he's the biggest name in Australian golf FOR HIS GOLF), the use of the word as you originally penned it makes 14 irrelevant and that leaves 13 which, I agree, is possible. I suggest though that this is not what you meant; in fact, I doubt you even considered the intended meaning in your original post. Do you habitually pull people up for spelling mistakes as well by any chance?

On your other issues. Defensive? Yes, of course. Why would you expect anything else when you lay into me you dolt (n. A stupid person; a dunce.) ?

Patronising? I don't think so; at least not originally. I'll be happy to oblige from now on though if it gets you off.

I think this conversation is at an end don't you?

To the OP:

Scott and Baddeley to hit form? I doubt it. Baddeley has, apparently, dropped the S&T swing which brought him a couple of victories and seen his form slump since then. Scott? Decent player, has the talent but has he the motivation or does he just want to be a surfer-dude really?

Scott in with a decent opening 71, Badds could only manage a 73. Nothing spectacular from either of your boys GJ but they're only 5 and 7 shots off th leaders respectively. ok
