Matthew Hoggard has ended speculation about his future by signing a three-year deal to become Leicestershire's new captain.

He will now drop down to the second tier of county cricket, to lead a young side that can only hope to improve on their bottom-placed finish in the 2009 campaign.

astottie (U2018354) Agree with your summing up of the situation, Hoggard was dropped from the England squad for valid reasons, his body language towards the end of his England career was very obvious-negative- and he does not come across as the sort of 'fire in your belly' motivator. Yorkshire will have know him, and this, better than anyone around, and will have made a 'business decision', rather than a 'sentimental' one.

The foxes have bought a 'reputation', one past its sell by date, and as you say, unless this bloke arrives with a magic wand, and a 100% motivational attitude, its all going to end in tears~~~~~~~~~~~ another quintessential English trait friedegg

Good signing but a 3 year deal is a HUGE gamble (IMO), seems strange that you guys are now signing county pros after having a pop at Notts for so long after they have been doing this for years. Nothing to do with the screws being tightened on Kolpaks of course????

Anyway good luck next season, hopefully Jeffo can do what he didn't at TB i.e. score runs.

OBR Notts never produced any of there own players that what got on peoples nerves. Finally you have gone down the home grown route. Tbh the kolpak players were coming to the end of their careers anyway, HD was sensational but over the last two years he became more hassle than his worth. Infact we haven't got any now (Claudes got English citizenship and Du Toit is Englished qualified anyway)

I just hope this isn't like Sol Campbell.

But then again I'm in a bad mood last night when I found out I was diva

Still pretty dissapointed though the outs list is much stronger than the ins list.

But with Hoggard this could help us really kick on

great signing.got to take a chance on a bit of quality, much better than signing 2 or 3 average players who are in and out of the team.this could be the challenge he needs and the young bowlers should benefit immensely.up the foxes!!

Hope Hoggy is able to contribute to the development of the county in the wider sense. There's no way he will play for 3 seasons.

I think Hoggy knows his England career is over so didn't need to head to one of the big boys. I think Leicestershire will give him the challenge a class player needs and the captaincy is the cherry on the cake. Looking forward to his visit to Bears. Grrrr

Darren Gough was most revealing about Hoggy's departure from Yorkshire at a sporting forum at Headingley on Saturday night ,when he told us all that Hoggy's descision not to stay was laregely because of the club's refusal to release him from the last few championship matches last season ,so that he could take part in 'Strictly Come Dancing' and pocket a hefty sum for the priviledge.
He was forced to pull out and Tuffers replaced him in the end.
Another reson not to mourn too much at his departure, when we learn about his priorities.
