Rooney for Barcelona?

Manchester United
comment on the article

Lots and lots of transfer rumours in Sunday's papers, as you would expect.

But one story stands out more than any other - the News of the World's claims that Barcelona will offer £85m for Manchester United's England striker Wayne Rooney in the summer, and that United might sell him.

You can read it in full here:

www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/spo...

So, what do you think...? Is this just a case of 2+2 = 5... or could such a move actually happen?

We know Barca have got hundreds of millions to spend and we also know United have got debts - big debts. But does that really mean they would have to sell Rooney, a year after seeing Cristiano Ronaldo leave for Real Madrid in a similar mega-bucks £80m fee?

There would be uproar if Rooney was sold, assuming of course he would agree to any deal.

Let's face it, he has not exactly issued a 'come and get me' plea has he...? In fact, the new father possibly seems the most settled of any superstar footballer currently in the Premier League.

But would United sell Rooney? And should they, if £85m is on the table?

Never worth 85 million. Just a story made up by the press, to sell their papers.

Typical newspaper speculation. Its surprising that so many seem to be taking it seriously, especially given that its Barcelona names as the buying team. When did Barcelona ever pay that ind of money for a player? Real Madrid maybe, Inter perhaps, but not Barcelona.
Add to that the fact that he simply wouldnt fit into their style of play ( I dont think they need a headless chicken).
Now I can see the gelled wonder persuading Calderon to bring his lover to the Neu Camp, but I think that ship may have passed already.
So its Old Trafford for the scouse traitor.

85m? Which joker came up with this figure? Rooney is worth no more than what ManU paid for him originally. And I doubt Barca would want him anyway. Why would they need him? They have better players than the overrated Shrek.

United shouldn't even consider the issue - debt or no debt! This move would put Rooney's World Cup chances in jeopardy. He would be an instant target by those wanting to hijack England's potential World Cup Final prospects - injury; lack of first-team football. It wouldn't be a good move for player or country...

completely made up story , as in its creative writing at its worst. its been conjured up by a newspaper trying to sell papers.

Its hard to get this point across enough as it just doesnt seem to go in, i doubt barcelona fc even know that this is a nonstory at the moment.
Barcelona want fabregas and robinho , these are true , is this not enough for these rags to sell papers? it seems not i suppose.

Here , Liverpool are going to bid 80 million for ashley cole. I hope that can make monday's papers as well.

Most ridiculous story of the year - absolute tosh! Rooney is worth way more than that and United would never sell him in a million years.

Dumbest thing ever. Rooney isnt worth 40mil let alone 85.

Id say hes about 25mil, Torres, Van Persie, Drogba are all more expensive than Rooney.

no surprise that no one's taking this seriously. Barca don't spend that sort of money. They have a fantastic youth system, outstripping that of man u in results (Messi, fabregas). Rooney is not a 'great' player, he's man u's best striker but he isn't as good as ibrahimovic. However look out for a.c, inter or real looking at this player and wanting a piece of him.

I don't see why this deal couldn't go through.
it seems unlikely but man u may need the money and rooney has already won everything with united, what else is there left to do?
his only reason for staying is to secure legendary status like giggs or scholes or sir charlton - but otherwise, why not barcelona? a new team, a new league, a new challenge.
