Looking at how poorly Cahill's played of late, perhaps Martin O'Neill knows something that you don't Jimbo.

A coincidence that Villa are 7 places above Bolton and have conceded ten goals less? I think not.

O'Neill did what was best by Cahill in my mind. He wanted first team football and we couldn't offer him it at the time. Mellberg and Laursen were both better defenders then Cahill at the time.

Even now I'm quite happy with Dunne and Collins and although I rate Cahill I don't think he's better than Dunne or Collins currently.

I still think Cahill could become an England regular in the future though and I wish him well.

Knee Jerking or what?

He's had three or four poor games-IN 18 MONTHS- they've come recently but against some of the best strikers in Europe. Hardly think that makes him a bad player Lofty.

He's also struggled since Zat Knight has arrived. Coincidence? I don't think so. Knight is a truly terrible defender.

Regarding Collins/Dunne:

Collins has had a good start to his Villa career. But he never stood out as anything more than just another team player at WHU. Difference between Cahill and Collins imo, i think Collins has found his level at Villa. I think Cahill has the goods to go up past Bolton, past Villa, into the top four teams- playing Champs Lg and International football.

Dunne. Good defender. I've always rated him. But again, he is 30 now, he's never been the slimmest. 2/3 years left in the PL max.

He's some way off the finished product though - as has been shown lately.

I'm not sure that's entirely true. The Villa boards attracted a good share of WHU fans telling us how we had signed a gem of a player. Probably similar to the way many Villa fans told you lot how good Cahill was.
