The Heat is off (for now)

comment on the article

With Tom Heaton due to return to Manchester United, Rangers may need to bring in another keeper on a short-term loan.

Heaton’s three-month spell at Loftus Road finishes after this weekend’s game against Sheffield Wednesday.

Rangers will look to bring him back, possibly on loan until the end of the season, but are unlikely to be able to do so before January and are preparing to be without him during the interim period.

He is expected to return for a second loan stint – unless a small fee for his permanent signing can be agreed.

Heaton’s contract at Old Trafford expires next summer. But as he will still be under 24, he will not be available on a Bosman free transfer, and any club that signs him without agreeing a deal with United could be ordered by a tribunal to pay a fee.

His departure could leave Jim Magilton lacking cover for Radek Cerny, so a number of possible options for a short-term signing are being considered.

Talking of cover, a left-back seemed an obvious requirement before the season started.

Ironically for a man frozen out by Paulo Sousa last term, Gary Borrowdale is the only outfield player to have played in every minute of every QPR league match this season.

Top of the list to replace or compete with him has been Argentine left-sided player Lucas Licht, who is currently with Spanish club Getafe.

In August he looked to be on his way to QPR, but the move did not materialise.

The 28-year-old is said to have an Italian passport, which ought to make signing him easier.

But his contract situation is unclear and a number of other clubs appear to be interested in him. Where his future lies seems to be anyone’s guess at the moment.

Rangers were previously confident of getting their man. So much so that they pulled out of a deal to sign teenage left-back Patrick van Aanholt on loan from Chelsea, and he joined Coventry instead.

That left Matt Connolly as the only (arguably) viable alternative to Borrowdale.

Connolly being hit by glandular fever left Rangers open to a real problem were Borrowdale to become unavailable.

The good news for them is that fears Connolly could be out for months rather than weeks have been allayed.

He returned to full training this week and should be back in action soon, although glandular fever is unpredictable and can become a long-term health issue.

I know. I had it years ago and am still affected by it from time to time. Some times more than others, it has to be said.

Ever seen Fawlty Towers, when Basil’s getting flak so clutches the leg that’s supposedly got shrapnel in it?

I’ve found that post-glandular fever syndrome, as it’s called, can strike just as suddenly.

In all seriousness, for a professional sportsman in particular, the illness is no joke.

Several footballers have felt the after-effects long after having the actual illness; a prime example being Marc Bircham, who was laid low from time to time during his Rangers career.

I hope Connolly now goes from strength to strength. He’s a good player and a fine prospect - but definitely not a left-back.

I'm guessing Man U have no intention of keeping Heaton beyond his current contract. Because it would seem strange for them to loan him out to play in a Championship team's reserve side rather than develop him within their own set up.

But what are the player's ambitions? Heaton was a regular in Cardiff's first team last season and won rave reviews and England recognition. Will he happily sign for us and then be used as a bench warmer?

Has Heaton ever, really, been given the opportunity to displace Cerny?

Because we saw last season that even with an England U-21 keeper on the books and even when suffering a dip in form, Cerny always kept hold of the gloves.

(Shame he couldn't always keep hold of the crosses!)

VFTP, Heaton played all the Carling Cup games, including the final round at Chelsea. Seemed to me Jim was taking a leaf from Wenger by sticking with him in the cup even though Cerny was on a good run, but absolutely the right decision. Perhaps if we bring him back in Jan it will be on the promise of a couple of run outs, starting with the very first weekend of the year in the F.A. Cup. Hopefully we can get a favourable home draw or two, then he could have a run of two or three games.

Also, I think if Cerny had been at the club when we bought Camp then he wouldn't have sulked his way to a transfer. But he was the established no.1 keeper, and had not only played a large part in staving off relegation in '07, but had kept (I believe) the third highest amount of clean sheets of any keeper in the division in '08. I'm a big Cerny fan, and think he is definitely, probably through experience, the better of the two keepers. But I can see where Camp's gripe came from.

Heaton on the other hand, would be joining a club on the move, as the definite no.2 to an ageing keeper with a ton of top flight and international experience. He'll be learning all the time, and getting plenty of oppurtunity over the next couple of seasons, hopefully at some point in the Premier League.
He might like London too.

As with all the current loanees where we go from here depends on how we succeed in the remainder of tne season. I assume that Heaton would be delighted to be in the squad of a team just promoted the the Prem and with the current number 1 getting on in years.

Tarabbt will obviously have other options particularly after he has been turning it on for the TV games but again a guaranteed start with a Prem club could sway him towards a long term deal with us.

Failure to get promotion will mean starting again in this department however, and will also mean players such as Buz look to their future.

And with the club sponsorship deals up for renewal during the next 12-18 months this really could be a make or break season for us.

RblockShepherdsBush, I agree with you if Heaton can look at the big picture he must believe with his talent and his favourable age he would be hopeful in his chances of taking over from the Cerny who is 36 in February.

Of course in the modern game 36 can be seen by many as a prime age for a keeper and Cerny aka 'The Fonz' by me and my Rangers pals, has been in superb form after a dissapointing start.

Cerny with his super smooth demeanor and experience has a real calming influence on his defender's and the amount of clean sheets he was able to achieve last year speak for themselves.

But as Leicester demonstrated that relaxed style of his on occassion can turn into inattentiveness, with disasterous results.

Heaton demonstrated at Cardiff last season and this season in the league cup, in particular against Chelsea, that he is a very exciting prospect.

So I would like to see Heaton as a full time Ranger and in time take over from Cerny, who I am not sure is a Premiership keeper.

plus Heaton's from Man utd! and when have they ever had a keeper whose turned out to be dodgy?!

Well, Connolly came on today after 27 minutes, for the injured Fitz Hall - and was absolutely magnificent. You wouldn't know he's been laid so low - let alone hasn't played for so many weeks!

But we missed Borrowdale - or, at least, a conventional left back. Sorry but Ramage was no cover - whilst Legs was also struggling at right back today.

So I do think we still need to get cover for our full backs - pronto!
(Along with cover for Cerny - it is not good news we couldn't sort Heaton's loan out beyond today . . .!)

Plenty actually: Roy Carroll, Raimond Van Der Gouw, Nick Culkin and Massimo Taibi to name just a few!

I of course would love to see Heaton back at LR and as we all know goalkeepers improve with age so on his behalf there are plenty of positives.
It's difficult being a goalie because there is only the one position that they play in so evaryone has to bide their time.
I can see Heaton back at LR permanently but it all depends where we'll be in 6 months time, mind you it also depends what Fergie 's plans for him might be...

If we let Tom Heaton go altogether it will be another waste of a good promising player. We all have our opinions on teams, players and tactics, but as well as we are playing at the moment we need to bolster the 1st team squad in January and take a risk that we WILL be in the play-offs next May and be in a good position to win promotion.

For me that means getting a very good goalkeeper and establish him asap. A good team starts from the back, sorry guys Cerny is not up to the mark. OK forget the silly clearnce against Leicester. He may be a good reflex keeper but he does too many things that let him down. I suppose we have been spoilt we top claas keepers in the past, and unfortunately he does not match them.

See Magilton is on the official site basically confirming this....that he is interested in getting Heaton back. That still leaves the issue of what we do in the mean time? Lets hope Cerny doesn't get injured.
