Ask Björn Borg

comment on the article

Five-time Wimbledon champion Björn Borg is set to renew his rivalry with John McEnroe in Chengdu this week and the Swede is ready to answer your questions.

Borg was unbeaten at Wimbledon between 1976 and 1980, eventually losing his title to McEnroe in 1981, and he also won the French Open six times between 1974 and 1981.

After retiring aged just 26 in 1982 he has become a regular feature of the ATP Champions Tour, which visits China for the first time this week.

Thanks for your questions, a selection have been sent hurtling through the ether to China and we hope to have the answers in the next few days.

I followed you in awe and attempted to copy your topspin game, which probably explains my probelms with Tennis Elbow. I used a Donnay Racket but could not afford the kit. You are the reason i have enjoyed 30 years of playing tennis. My one regret is that you retired too early at 26 and deprived me of watching you and McEnroe going head to head. You could have won another 2-3 French Opens even if Mac was awesome on grass, no-one was close to you on clay. Any regrets?

Good question was gonna ask something similar. I too missed the prospect of more H2Hs with Borg and Mac, whose match up was my fave of all time. Amazing stuff!

Bjorn watching your tennis was like magic - thank you for all those wonderful matches and many hours of special tennis. Which one of your slams was most special and why?

In 1980, when you won Wimbledon for the fifth time, what at that time, was in your opinion the most needed improvement required in the game of tennis. Twenty-nine years later, in 2009, what is the one change that you think would most improve the game now? Finally, you have been so many people's idol, I think more than any tennis player has ever been, because you could fight so hard and win, but with it, you were a wonderful example to the world.

How on earth did you manage to never show a flicker of emotion, no matter what was happening on court? Did the emotion come out in the locker room after you lost a match you should have won?

Many say Federer is the all time great in tennis but do you think all players would have struggled with Nadal on his day and therefore Nadal is the greatest player in terms of his beating Ferderer on all surfaces - so greatest on match day?

Q. Bjorn - the Golden Era of Tennis - great to have you answering questions, you are one of my favourite players ever. You were such an iconic and central figure of the Golden era, among the likes of other greats like Mac and Connors. What do you think made the Golden Era happen and made it so great? Do you think we will ever see another Golden Era full of such great personalities? If not why? Do you think that maybe players these days have to take things much more seriously and that perhaps this gets in the way?

Q. what are your favourite great matches, that you have played in and also not played in?

If Bjorn doesn't answer my question, I'd be delighted if you could pass on to him what an amazing player he was, and that I have very special memories of his Wimbledon wins and matches. It was him that got me into watching tennis as a young child, and I especially enjoyed his rivalries with Mac and Connors. He popularised tennis for many with his rock n roll image and was a central and iconic figure of the best days of tennis - the Golden Era. Thanks for the memories and for getting me into the sport Bjorn ok
