Boards' expectations

Premier League Bolton Wanderers

Each year in the annual report the Cheif Executive statement, amonst many other long winded subjects, outlines the future objectives for the following season and beyond.

These are usually very definitive with quotes like "to compete in Europe on a regular basis"(LSL's 1st season) or "to retain our P'ship status this coming season will be our priority"(GM's 1st full season).

This years is rather more ambiguous with no definate objective.

So here goes.

LOOKING AHEAD (part of it):

"The past year has inded been difficult. Ever increasing competition, supporter expectations and problems in the wider economy have all given rise to significant challenges.

Our objectives, however remain clear and focussed: by maintaining a policy of ongoing improvement through investment in the playing squad, our staff, facilities and technology we will continue to build a successful and sustainable business.

There are no short cuts and it will take time and patience. We will engage with and listen to all our stakeholders, and in particular our supporters and business partners, and look forward to continuing our journey with their ongoing support"

Make of it what you will but I see an honest and quite confident appraisal of where we are going without bold comments that can only put pressure on individuals.

Gartside says much the same thing in his statement but is a little bit more annoyingly grovelly.

There are a lot of words but it doesn't really say anything. If you want to paraphrase, it would go something like.

"We want to do well and we'll try our best!"

If we're looking for some comfort, there's another quote.

"Overall we are more stable than we have been for some time. The accounts are not qualified in any way - we are fortunate that we have strong and stable owner behind us and we are looking at our options in that context."

Personally, I suspect we're screwed, and that's not down to incompetence. We just don't have enough revenue to do anything but struggle, with the way the game has changed in the last 2-3 years.

So enjoy being in the Prem while it lasts.

We aim to stay in the Prem and see how far we can get. As long as we stay there and improve bit by bit then I'm happy

We lost £13.2m last year. Eddie Davies cant continue to underwrite losses at that kind of rate.

We have no money and we are in big trouble.

£13.2 million last year was nothing when you take into account Elmander (£8m), Shittu (£2m) and Muamba (£5m) alongside the fee's paid to loan Puygenier and Makakula

I think a lot of us have been saying this for ages: We've no money and the board's sole ambition is to hang on in the Prem at all costs for as long as possible.

Therefore, finishing 17th will be viewed a s success from here on in.

If that floats your boat, then fair enough.

But it's not for me.

I'd rather see us go down and not be scared to actually try and compete.

we are competing, look at how much we have spent on players recently!!!

At least we aren't going out of our means to do it like Leeds did

WE are over 60 million in debt, can we afford that and can we afford to drop into the Championship.

I don't think we can on both counts.

business speaking yes we can, sell off player assets to raise most of the money and then a parachute payment.

However of course we don't want to go down. But I see that we wil bring players in and sell for similar if not greater in the future. Following the lead of teams like Wigan, who lets face it have a bus full of fans to keep their team going
