Live - Wednesday's World Cup qualifiers

World Cup
comment on the article

Thank goodness for Diego Armando Maradona and Argentina. Without them, tonight wouldn't be all that, you know.

At 2300 BST, El Diego will watch nervously from the touchline as his boys take on Uruguay in Montevideo - with the winner qualifying for the World Cup and the loser knowing they might be out of the competition altogether.

It's enormous. Before that, we've got relatively meaningless qualifiers between England and Belarus, Liechtenstein and Wales and Czech Republic and Northern Ireland to get stuck into.

Plenty to keep us occupied all night long. Oh, and 606 will be open until 0100 BST on Thursday, a two-hour extension, just for the South American matches - and just for you.

Is it me or has Owen Hargreaves picked up a German accent?

Nah mate... here's what he said when asked about England's chances of glory in South Africa..

"Yah, diz iz a vondervul opportunity vor die manschaft to spiel vitt our efficient vurkrate on ze tournament.

Ve hav die strong characters unt ein ubersturmfuhrer in kommand vot vill totally destroy ze opposition.

Ja wit Crouch unt ze little englander zuper power forvert Rooney in attack ve have ein uber blitzkreig machine dat together with ze mentality arbeiten iz die dream of all ze fatherland.."

nothing there to suggest an accent shift then..
