CAppello said he picks a team by form, why is he playing???? Heskey is pants. Carlton Cole is too. I would rather see some fresh blood play for england than these hasbeens. robert Green is a joke and I never want to see him put on an england shirt again.

I, sadly, have to agree with a lot of comments so far.

Heskey is not good enough, I know we have qualified for the World Cup but that should be a given for us anyway.

Heskey will not scare anybody at the highest level, forget players like Simunic & co I mean the top defenders!

Teams that win all their qualifying games are not always the ones that go far in tournaments.

2002 brazil struggled to even get there, France in Euro 92 won 10 out of 10 & then crashed & burned.

We seem to be praying that Rooney can play 7 games in a row without getting injured or suspended for any period & then we may win the World Cup.

Good teams have options & we are quickly runing out of time to try ours, even our GK position is up in the air & we all seem to forget how bad James can be. He was woeful against Portugal when Postiga scored, allowing a back four to drop further & further.

Tie that in with a right back who cant defend & a undroppable centre half who is neither fit or mentally switched on.

We have qualified from a poor group & the reality will start in June.

Lets not forget that Brazil, Spain & Germany are there & look a lot more settled thatn we do.

Why do we persist playing Gerrard ina postion that doesnt suit him? It has to either him or Lampard but a 6mill a year manager should show some real balls & do the best thing for England.

If you guys think a team of world class players can win a world cup, you guys should shoot yourself in the head.

Let's go back to 1966 for a moment. Geoff Hurst was merely an addition to an England side that boasted the partnership of Roger Hunt and Jimmy Greaves. When Geoff Hurst took Greaves' place, Sir Alf Ramsey must have found out that Hurst could fit into the England's team and resisted the pressure of calling Greaves back to the final. Imagine if Sir Ramsey gave in to the media pressure, will you guys win the world cup then?

Back to the present, you do not need your starting XI to be entirely world class. What you need is the players fitting into the right system or could fulfill the manager's strategic ideas. That's probably the reason why Heskey was selected for all games. He may fit Capello's system but not O' neill's system. It is clear that O'Neill wants to build villa around Ashley young, Milner and Agbonlahor.

Look at championship winning sides. Does Chelsea and Man Utd boast a winning squad that contain a lot of world class players?

Yes indeed.

Also that was 1966, the relevance in todays game?

He plays him cos he is the best target man in the country. You may think he doesn't score enough but we get plenty of goals anyway, a fair few from Heskey's hold up play.

What we need to do is stop shipping cheap goals - Mr Ferdinand, Cole and Johnson!?!

Whatever the reason Heskey's in the team, he shouldn't even be considered for the World Cup squad while he can't even start games for his own club

Because we all know that imposing arbitrary criteria on selection produces the best chances of winning.

No one can under-estimate the importance of an international footballer having to play regularly for his club. Whoever plays football at ANY level knows that to be on top of their game, you need to be playing regular football!

premier league and international football are different. in the premier league heskey has no job . but in international football england need heskey as he takes out two men so that barry gerrard lamps can run in get their foot or head onto the cross and score. when heskey plays and england are attacking it is like taking out one of their deffenders. it makes it easier for rooney lennon walcott.
dont just say oh he cant play for england because he doesnt play for villa. capello picks him because unlike you lot he has a football brain he has his reasons know one except other managers can criticise him.
he has managed ac milan twice when they were a big footballing power, he had sucess with roma, he managed the mighty juventus when they were winning titles for fun, the realmadrid team where he won the la liga twice, seria a title 10 times when it was the best league in the world. give the guy a break because he knwos what he is doing
