Terry wins British title

comment on the article

Probably no huge surprise that Simon Terry won the inaugural GB National Series title at Lilleshall on Sunday.

The Grantham archer has been in fine form on the international stage this season, winning a World Cup event in Turkey and taking silver in the Grand Final in Copenhagen last week.

Read more here: news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/arc...

The competition also saw the introduction of a new scoring system which is being introduced by the sport's governing body next year.

Each archer fires three arrows in each end and the person with the highest aggregate score picks up two points, while a tied end sees both archers earn one point.

The scores are cleared at the conclusion of each end, so each set of three becomes a mini-match in its own right.

If the archers are tied at the end of their match, a three-arrow nearest-the-middle shoot-off decides the winner.

What do you make of the new system? Will it make for tighter matches and better television, as Fita hope?

Dear Peter

Thank you for posting an archery article. It is appreciate from those active Archers who read this particular forum, as opposed to the others who get immense amusement from constantly mentioning fairy tale characters or long standing Radio 4 soap operas.

However, please, arrows are shot, they are not fired.

As to the new format it seems like a good thing to me especially as it would increase the pressure on good shooting. However as my archery is very much of the traditional format I would hope that one of the regulars here who is more au fait with modern archery will comment accordingly.

Take care

TMF

Sorry, thats target archery and not my bag!

However, as above, no arrow has ever been 'fired' they are always shot!

Or 'loosed' to give it, what I beleive to be its sunday title.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the new scoring system - two points for a win on each end of three arrows and the aggregate score is then reset for the next end. It means that if you 'shoot' one duff arrow in an end it doesn't necessarily mean the end of the competition for you.

Thank you for the reply Peter, it *is* appreciated.

However you are more likely to come across that term where there are a group of archers "under command" and shooting together, the accepted commands being Nock, Draw and Loose. In the same situation the command to stop shooting is "Fast" being, of course, the opposite of Loose.

Anyway back to the scoring system. It would seem to be a more consistent way of doing things but, as mentioned already, where my style of archery is involved in competitions they are very much for fun.

As an example one is six arrows in a minute at approximately 25yds, the inner bull scoring 12 and then scored to the numbered rings and not the colours. Not something you are likely to come across at a GNS event!

I believe wyno70 is not in the UK so his\her requirements are more directed towards hunting than scoring but I may be wrong.

Anyway take care

TMF

Correct TMF, you are wrong!!

I'm Essex based, just not interested too much in target archery, all a bit too formal for me.

My background is 'Field Archery'.

I stand (well sit at the PC) corrected.

Us lot, and I mean the Archers I shoot with, are seriously thinking along the NFAS route instead of GNAS although we are also seriously thinking of getting our GNAS courses in place as well for instructors and the like.

It would be very easy for us to set up a NFAS affiliation due to what we do.

Take care

but going back to the Simon Terry point, I wonder what 'whining Wills' excuse for being beaten will be this time....

Having shot with "whining Wills"(admittedly a long time ago) i know that he does shoot better with a bit of fire in his belly, Peter Suk has done amazing things for British archery but not everyone has the same mentality and clearly Peters way didn't suit all people.
