Minichiello handed UKA coaching role

British athletics
comment on the article

Toni Minichiello has been appointed as UK Athletics national coach for combined events after guiding Jess Ennis to the world heptathlon title.

He will continue to coach Ennis, but he will also spend time with the likes of World Youth champion Katarina Thompson and our number one junior decathlete Daniel Gardiner in Loughborough.

Meanwhile, Fayyaz (Fuzz) Ahmed has been appointed national high jump coach.

What do you make of the two appointments by UKA head coach Charles van Commenee as the preparations for London 2012 continue to gather pace?

Does this also mean that KELLY SOTHERTON is out ?
It looks as if her time is over and no way can she be up to it anymore,at least not to Olympic standards.

Kelly Sotherton could still be at the business end of majors if she learns how to throw a javelin!
Very disappointing that she hasn't really addressed this problem throughout her career- especially as she has the tools to throw a fair distance!

Just to correct a few inaccuracies. We have never had full time national event coaches before and indeed we have had no one with responsibilty for many events this year. Toni was employed on part scholarship and part personal coach to Jessica and did for a period of time chair the UK Combined Events Group.

John trower has had a number of roles within UKA and is now redundant. He was not the National Javelin Coach prior to his departure but was Technical Lead for Throws - a crazy part of the now defunct performance management structue.

Several other coaches have been appointed this but with little publicity. Malcolm Arnold is hurdles coach, Aston Moore triple jump coach and John Herbert long jump coach amongst others.

Bestform you obviously dont read the newspapers kelly has had foot injury this year and had surgery and your comment not up to olympic standard what do you base that on then, certainly not your knowledge of athletics. Before you make such a stupid comment find out the facts first???????

Would hate to upset mummy4u so I'll support him!
A medal would have been a real possibility for Kelly had she been fit for the 'Worlds'.
Javelin is the big question mark.
Apart from the formentioned, Kelly is more or less on par with Jess over the other six events.
Next years Europeans should be interesting if Kelly is competing.

Take out the javelin and there isn't that much between Jess and Kelly if you look at their standard performances. Jess is slightly quicker in the hurdles, Kelly slightlt better in the shot, roughly equal in the 200m and Kelly slightly better in the 800m. Jess gains quite a lot in the high jump but Kelly at her best gets most of it back in the long jump. So not much between them in those 6 events. There is, though, about a 200points advatage to Jess in the javelin!

Plus Jess is younger and likely to improve in most events with Kelly probably only able to maintain her performances. Kelly has fluked a 40m javelin throw in the past and that sort of performance, if everything else was OK, would probably see her in the hunt for medal at all major championships.
