ZZ Signs

Scottish Premier Celtic
comment on the article

CHINESE internationalist Zheng Zhi was officially unveiled as a Celtic player today and he is eagerly looking forward to playing for the Hoops for the first time.

While that won’t come in tomorrow’s SPL game against St Mirren, the player known as ‘ZZ’ has already trained with his new team-mates and he’ll be working hard to get his level of fitness up so that he can try and push his way into Tony Mowbray’s first-team squad.

“Celtic is a huge football club and I’m delighted to be here,” Zheng Zhi said. “And I’m looking forward to working with the manager. I can play in a few positions but it’s up to the manager where he wants me to play. I feel good although I need some more fitness work.

“Celtic are one of the top sides in European football and I had heard about them when I was in China, and I hope there will be more and more Chinese fans and local Scottish fans who’ll support me and the club.

“When I heard that there was a chance for me to join Celtic, I jumped at it. It’s the perfect move for me at this stage of my career. I was at Charlton for a few years, but this is the perfect next step for me, and the reaction to the news back in China has been unbelievable.”

Tony Mowbray had tried to sign ZZ when he was manager of West Brom and the player was at Charlton. And the Celtic manager is delighted to have now got his man for Celtic.

“He brings versatility which is one of the main reasons he’s here,” the Hoops boss explained. “He played for Charlton against my West Brom side and he was always their most effective player, playing either behind the striker or a holding midfielder, or even a wide player.

“He’s a good footballer and I’ve said from day one that I like good footballers and he fits very much into that category.

“He’s comfortable with the ball at his feet. He can see a pass, he can play a pass and he can manipulate the ball. I want him to come and enjoy his football. I tried to sign him when I was at West Brom so he understands that I respect him as a football player.

“He’s got to get himself fit and up to speed, get in the team and enjoy his football. He’s here to hopefully enjoy being part of a successful Celtic team.”

Welcome to Paradise ZZ

I really have doubts about this one lads .

Hes pushing 30 , and has spent most of his career at charlton in the championship where the fans are not exactly gutted to see him go .

Ive no idea where he's going to fit in as were overloaded with midfielders as it is , most of whom id suggest look better than him .

And why was he unveiled just before the transfer window closing , ruling him out of the europa cup when he is a free agent and could have signed at any point ?

Lets just judge him on his performances on the field... not on his age, past clubs or past fan opinions.

I think Celtic have signed ZZ as a squad player who can give cover in a few positions. He has not got a great pedigree as a player so it is not a particularly good signing from the footballing aspect but looking at the commercial side it is one of the best signings Celtic have ever made. Whatever the overall cost of signing him is will be repaid many times over with the increased revinue from sales in China.

Let's see. There are over a billion people in China. Zheng Zhi has been picked to be that country's football captain, so he must be pretty good to have been selected out of potentially millions of football players. What's Scotland got? Five million people ? And we pick our international side from that, and consider our represenatives to be pretty good players. Statistics alone suggest the guy must be talented'

Shane, Florida Dweller

He isnt currently the China captain....Du Wei has that role now and he only played a couple of seasons for Charlton not most of his career. i dunno if he will be any good or not but im not getting too excited about him as he is just cover as he is versatile (although versatile can be shorthand for he doesnt excel in any position but is adequate in a few).

id be hacked off if this was a marketing stunt

so statisically talented that he has been a free agent since he left the mighty Charlton who because they are based in London would statistically stand a better chance of attracting good players and finances to play in the Premership right?.....hmmm. or more plausibly he is the best player in a nation who isnt very good at football.

Du Wei (yes him) is now the captain of China previously Dundee's Fan Zhiyi has captained them, none of those two would have got into the Scotland team now or ever. by your logic im looking forward to watching India taking the world football stage by storm soon because statistically they must have at least 22 good players out of there billions of people
