Barking or not?

Boris Johnson in a bitter row over where venues for where events should be has come up with the idea of moving Badminton from the tempory building to save money to the excel. Whereas Tessa Jowell wants, shooting to stay at Woolwich and for badminton to go to a cheaper venue in Barking. Who's right, who's wrong and where do you want it?

How much funding a sport recieves, TV coverage, and how much precedence it recieves at an Olympic Games are decided by 2 things.

Popularity, and the host nation's chances of winning.

Badminton is a minority sport here in the UK.

The Great British Team stand next to no chance of picking up a Gold Medal.

Next year's Thomas Cup will give us all a valuable insight into our chances. England made the Quarter Finals in last years tournamnet.

A Bronze is a possibility in the men's event, but Denmark, Indonesia and Korea look safer bets to challenge Malaysia and the all-conquering Chinese.

Since Emms' retirement, the British women's game just dosn't have the experience or the quality (and this of course will effect the mixed-doubles).

At this stage therefore, the government are unlikely to see Badminton as a high priority.

The event could end up anywhere.

I think Princes Anne should be consulted on this issue also the royal college of veterinary surgeons, after all it is the safety of the horses that is paramount.

I'm not sure that lack of interest on the board indicates a lack of interest in the sport since there is a high proportion of people that play it; there are definitely more Badminton players than Tennis players in the U.K.

On the topic, I don't think it is a good idea to have athlete's travel across London to get to a venue unless there are guarantee's that everything will go smoothly and they are chaperoned.

The lack of comment on this board was mainly caused by regular posters moving to closed sites to avoid the WUMs

The Excel is an excellent venue, has it's own docklands rail link, has wonderful views across the docks, many restaurants and food outlets, and is currently being extended.
I can't see why the objections.

Undoubtedly, but if indoor Tennis courts were as easy to access as Badminton courts it would be a different story I think.

I play Badminton weekly because courts are easy and cheap to book, where as Tennis I would either need to join a local club or use the council ones, which are open only 6 months a year, only when its not raining, and even if they are open you will never get a court (theres only 3!)

Possibly, but as you are never going to get as many indoor tennis courts we will never find out !! They take up too much room for LAs to do it. Also problem with playing tennis is that games take longer, so you are hard pushed to play a set in the 1 hour you have the court, whilst badders you can fit 3/4 or more games in.

I restarted tennis about 12 years ago, but after 3 years of being rained off, or having to pay a fortune for floodlights and being off in the winter decided to retake badders back up - and I have to say, personally, I prefer badders as a game.

Other good thing about badders, is not having to chase after balls after each rally is over !!
