Ashley Cole Signs New 4 Year Deal!

Premier League Chelsea

On the Chelsea website that Ashley Cole has signed a new 4 year deal.
Big news for me as he was easily one of our best players last season, and has continued that form over this season, fully deserving his goal against Burnley on Saturday.
In my opinion we have the best left back and right back in the Premiership, how they find the energy to get up and down the flanks I have no idea!
In fairness to Ashley Cole, he takes a lot of flak and I know a lot of people were not sure of him when he joined from Arsenal, but he has knuckled down and is producing arguably his best performances of his career. At 5m and Gallas, I believe it was a real snip considering the glut of talent we have at centre back now. A fully deserved new contract.

What's really odd is that people spend so much effort and bile arguing the best left back in the world - when they only seem to really know the guy who plays for their team and amazingly most think that guy is the best in the world! It's got to be pretty near the gold standard for damning someone with faint praise to boot so why the argument?

With the exception of the odd outlier full backs are generally speaking players who failed in other positions. A good youth system should be able to fill both roles adequately. Short of Dani Alves or someone who is actually good going forward and adequate defensively the money spent makes no sense to me - Alves got 5 goals last year but only 2 or so a year for Sevilla so maybe there are no outliers.

Left backs on average are probably better than right as they may end up there because of their left footedness. Whereas with the odd exception right backs failed or were unsuitable for any position.

My point allowing for outliers the 2nd/3rd best forward in the world is relatively much better then the 10th than the 2nd/3rd left/right back from the 10th (even allowing for the shortage of left footed people). I think the high prices paid for full backs is as much to do with some clubs/managers need to spend what is available and the shortage of quality in more important positions.

Even then I can't support an argument Cole is a top class left back (or at better than best of a modest bunch of footballers). His work forward does not really produce much directly (a goal and an a assist a year from what a 100 crosses+ a year?). It's not an issue at Chelsea but to a team without height he has less defensive value at set pieces. Indeed you have say Lampard as front jumper who has to rush out for the shortie when it would make more sense to have an actual defender but Cole is by the post a better role for an attacking midfielder i.e. he might be near best left back for Chelsea but not when assessing overall value. I also think he too often stands off wingers and lets them cross too much - he's probably better marking a dribbler as perversly standing off and not committing with a bit of pace is good. He also misses too many games at 28 to give him a 4 year contract on wages more suitable for a 3rd centre half/utility winger striker/etc IMO.

++++++++++

Hypercritically I am actually looking forward to seeing Glen Johnson in Europe he is probably the only full back who threatens to be worth a fair amount (albeit the fee paid for him is already spent). Even then I expect in Europe, internationally or against strong opponents with continental referees his foul foul foul style of defending might not work so well. Here's hoping he proves me pessimistic for country but not club ;-)

Seeing as my brother in law and girlfriend are chelsea fans I guess I shouldbe pleased for them as despite Cole being a complete tool he isnt a bad left back in all fairness. just a shame he is a poor example of a humn being. It isnt just Cole who's over paid people, it's ALL the players in the premiership their wages are a joke. I still think I'd choose Evra over Cole as an all round left back but it's a great signing for Chelsea and I am sure I'll hear all about it 20 times when I get home :)

Yes the same evra who s....s in his pants anytime he sees lennon, twice last year evra was made to look like a plumber on a football pitch, yes evra is fast but he isn't the best of defender and if you have pace and courage you will find him out, like lennon has been doing the past 3 games they have played against each other.

Now lennon has only had maybe 2 good games against ashley over 3 years wich means that he is still trying to get the better of cole, whereas he has already worked out how to beat evra.

The only things evra does better than ashley are crosses and attacking at full pace, ashley is more like a link player, whereas evra would take the ball and run with it,wich in some ways can put your team under trouble as there is no one covering for him.

Ashley cole is the best defending left back in the world but evra, clichy are certainly quicker wich makes it look like they can defend better but it is down to their incredible pace that they are able to not be found out a lot.

I forgot, very rarely do you see ashley cole need help to snuff out ronaldo or a very good right winger but evra always needs help to take care of lennon, watch last year game against tottenham and see that soon as rooney was switched to his side evra was suddenly able to contain lennon and not because of his defensive skills.

Don't confuse fast and being a good defender, ashley cole is first and foremost a good defender and after a very good, fast attacking full back.

lmao, he's gotta feel a bit of a pratt now.

If he'd held out a number of days he could have bargained for a heck of alot more seeing as chelski can't exactly buy a replacement.

Must feel like a complete fool.

Goalkeeper
Edwin Van Der Sar Manchester United
Defense
Glen Johnson Portsmouth
PATRICE EVRA Manchester United
Rio Ferdinand Manchester United

Ashley Young Aston Villa
Steven Gerrard Liverpool
Ryan Giggs Manchester United
Cristiano Ronaldo Manchester United

CAN'T SEE CASHLEEY COLE IN THERE - WHY BECAUSE CHAVSKI FANSDON'T PICK THE TEAM OF THE YEAR - ON THE CONTRARY THE TEAM OF THE YEAR IS PICKED BY PEOPLE WHO ARE KNOWLEDGABLE

-----------------------

People with knowledge would not put Giggs on that list.
He was excellent. Now he is just playing well in the odd minutes he gets.
