How will Motherwell do this season?

Scottish Premier Motherwell
comment on the article

Righto. The new Scottish Premier League season is almost upon us.

We aim to publish a preview for each of the 12 clubs next week and would like to hear how you think your favourites will get on.

The Fir Park squad has been decimated over the summer and new manager Jim Gannon has a big rebuilding job on his hands. Is he the man to take Motherwell on and can he do it with such a callow side?

Let us know your thoughts and we'll include some of them in our preview, along with the wise words of our BBC Scotland pundits.

Despite losing key players such as Hughes, Clarkson and Smith, i feel that the squad looks to be playing better than the one which we had this time last year.

A lot of our squad is very young but they still managed to score twelve goals in europe before the season has even started, and that is twelve more goals than last year.

In Jim Gannon we have a top quality manager who is well known for his ability to produce young talent. He is also willing to give these players an opportunity to play for the first team which has worked out perfectly so far as we have witnessed some young players which quite possibly could be Scotland's next big things. The players I am talking about are Paul Slane, Jamie Murphy and Ross Forbes. These three have scored 8 goals between them in only 6 games.

I believe that with this young, talented squad which also has experienced players in it, we will be right in the mix for third place next season.

I agree with that. I have read a lot of good about Jim Gannon in the press and online, and I think he can take Well forward this season. I think with the right mix of youth and experience and a squad with enough players to provide competition to get in the team (ie you have to earn your place) they will get back in the top six, possibly even third or fourth.

Okay, so they are out of Europa but I think their performances show there is a foundation being built.

Hopefully the support will get behind them and a bit of encouragement will go a long way too,

I`m a `well fan man and boy since 1945 and I believe it`s about time we had consistency in the running of this great wee club. no use bringing in managers who only want to use the club as a stepping stone for their careers. having said that this club is capable of third or fourth at the end of this season smiley

John F Kennedy, why would you want us to get relegated? to save the skins of your wee team? We're at least top six this season.

We have no chance of 3rd or 4th, I'm hoping for top 6, but just wanting to avoid th relegation battle.

Our defence is still a complete shambles, and until that is sorted it doesn't matter how good we look going forward as everything we score shall be cancelled out.

Good attack + poor defence makes for really exciting viewing though, so I'm looking forward to the season.

Was at the St Johnstone game and it was a cracker. Great turnout from the well fans too.

The problem with a new manager is always that he will have a different view of the players that were frequently regulars last season. However, if it makes them up their game, so much the better. Gannon obviously has a view to give young players a chance. "If they're good enough, they're old enough" and so it has proved with Forbes, Slane & Hutchison. Three players that McGhee never gave a chance to. Saunders has also been given a chance to elbow his way into central defence rather than right back under McGhee (a couple of times). The one player that was brought in last season was Murphy, and he has still to establish himself as a starter with Gannon, despite being a regular in the Scotland Under 21 squad.

Maybe McGhee was only interested in forwards/goalscorers. But Gannon has out-trumped him with Forbes and Hutchison scoring 6 between them already this season.

If the young guys can stay the course for a full season I reckon we will finish certainly in the top 6, and pushing for a Europa spot, but possibly lose some at the end of the season. However, this will give us a few shillings to invest in the team for next season's Europa. ok
