The Stanford Final

comment on the article

After a week containing several upsets, most notably of Serena and Jankovic, we have a final of Venus Williams Vs Marion Bartoli. There head to head is 1-0 in favour of Venus but that was on the grass courts of wimbledon.

Venus Williams yesterday destroyed Dementieva only dropping one game. However, I didn't particularly think Venus played all that well and the scoreline was very flattering. It was just a few errors from dementieva on big points. Venus over the week has been very dominant over her opponents in both singles and doubles so I don't think fatigue will be a factor in today's final.

Marion bartoli has been a surprise finalist in many respects. She had beaten jankovic from 2 match points down. It is slightly similar to her wimbledon 2007 story. She has just her powerful and early baseline hitting off both wings to make her opponents lose time. She then didn't have to face serena after her shock loss to stosur. I bet 90% of people thought stosur would reach the final but she ultimately had a let down after her biggest win of her career. Bartoli dropped the middle set 6-1 so is clearly out for the taking. She did deal with stosurs big serves though so venus's second serve must look like a tasty treat to batter at.

Venus has far superior movement to bartoli and a bigger first serve. She will pretty much do what she did at wimbledon and do side to side stuff. However if venus's unforced error count piles up and bartoli bashes some winners, bartoli could win. However I will predict a Venus straight set win

30-15 to Honeybee for having drunk too much red bull, please focus on your game and stop slurping juice over the chairs.

"...she didn't win it, Venus lost the match." doh

Ooooohhhhh!!!!
THAT is really the end.

It's up there with "It's not you, it's me..." bubbly

Remind me in future, please insaniac, of something I should have known all-along.
STAY AWAY from Williams obsessed Tennisinsaniac and co threads!!

thetennisinsaniac-"You haven't listed the gamesmanship of Venus williams. Serena didnt fake an injury at 5-5 because that would be stupid. Serena did seem a little dodgy with the whole toilet break thing but thats about it. In fact a lot of people have used gamesmanship against the williams"
--------------------------
I agree with you. They have been playing over a decade and people try to cling on to straws to make them look bad.Oh she cramped-must be the first player to have to stop the match because of that-or not!And as I have already established that first example is about Henin and not Williams. And no examples about Venus.
We should ask the referee to declare a technical knock out.

Some players try the mind games more than others.

I'm not sure I've seen Venus do it, but do remember Serena making a meal of an injury and my thinking that at the time.

However, seeing as we don't have the new roof installed yet, and it's starting to rain, I'm declaring the match abandoned.

Well played Marion, unlucky Venus, good entertainment you gave us.

I'm a more well rounded sort of fan I know when they have defeated themselves or when they opponents win.

You should conosu2 when a tennis player commits a high number of errors they have made themselves lose. If a player comes up with winners they were outplayed and their opponents beat them.

Often when you see Venus and Serena and see their error count when they lose its normally quite high. Thats why I say that. I do give credit when credits due. Not a lot is needed for yesterday only 15 winners in a 3 set match and had 59 unforced errors gifted to her.

" unforced errors gifted to her."

Of course, Williams' generosity is legion.
Wherever, whenever either of them can, they voluntarily, under no opponent return pressure at all, 'gift-wrap' consecutive points and hand them to countless opponents with a beaming smile.

All the while their fantastic photographer 'Daddy' will be encouraging them in their unselfish bounty !

Never under pressure from unreturnable returns from a double-handed maestro.
Perish the thought !!
It's all within a Williams !!

You do realise there is a difference between a forced error and an unforced error. Venus hit 59 unforced errors. I don't know how many forced errors there were.
