After a superb last dive it is now official.
Tom Daley, 15, of Plymouth is now 10 metre diving World Champion

It was an absolutely tense competition, with 4 competitors gaining a distinct lead early on in the finals, Daley joined Qui Bo and Zho Lüxin of China, and Matthew Mitcham of Australia. After Round 4, Daley was in 4th position, approx. 10 points behind Zho Lüxin, when he started a spree with 2 superb dives, he snatched 3rd from the Chinese. Mitcham and Qui Bo both could not repeat their high standards from earlier, and with another perfect dive, Daley won by 10 points.

Congratulations Tom

I never expected that I'ld get to the 606 swimming forum beforesmiley...I had to watch the diving at the Olympics and understand its rules bcoz of young Tom. I've watched his interviews and he's a superb kid...being a victim of bullying myself, I really felt for him, knowing he can't react to those fools, or else it would be headlines of 'Daley assaults student'. Congrats Tom, I hope you inspire kids all over the world to take up any sport no small or strange or silly it might seem; it would greatly reduce knife crime, drug abuse etc.

I've followed Tom's career since he was 11. Congratulations to him for his fantastic performance and win.

Sadly, it says everything about this country that he was bullied out of his previous school. One days perhaps people will get back to teaching their children to respect others.

A shame that it is impossible for kids to take up the sport.
There are only 6 10m boards in the country, and the few pools that still have diving boards are terrified to let kids use them because of mythical health & safety issues.

At his tender age this is an incredible achievement. For someone so young to handle the pressure so much better than his more experienced opponents is phenomenal. This success makes him a beacon of hope and a role model to other young sporting hopefuls across the land. Congratulations to him, and I hope he enjoys this moment. He's earned it, and I wish him the best for the future particularly at London 2012.

In addition to my earlier comment, young sporting success stories carry a heavy burden in this country, because they tend to have as yet untarnished reputations and so the media builds them up to knock them down. However Daley is a genuinely likeable athlete and this is in many ways as important as his success because everyone will warm to him. I cannot comprehend the 'bullying' saga because the only expalnation is jealousy and envy. Why do Brits get on their own stars backs? Fortunately the majority are behind Daley and other British young hopefuls (e.g. Laura Robson) and we should all support these people as they represent our country's sporting future.

He is not "genuinely likeable". He comes across as stuck up and a bit of an idiot.

He comes across as a 15 year old to me.

well done tom, brilliant dives in every round. also, a decent set of dives in the 10m synchro, despite the low position for a third competitive dive for you and max, it was really good and a good chance for the future.

I'd also like to say that i do follow diving as a sport and, compared to some participants in other sports, divers are not only modest but also incredibly brave. throwing yourself off a concrete board 10m above water, performing complicated moves and not gaining a serious injury takes a lot of guts.
