Khan

comment on the article

Ok fair play he won last night with a good points victory, Got hit a bit too much i thought and i believe a fighter at 140 with a decent punch would have knocked Khan out because he did at times seem bothered by his punches. So lets get ready for all the media hype for the next few weeks about how great Khan is.

Amir Khan is a great boxer. He has only lost one fight out of 22 fights. The knock against Breidis Prescott taught Khan a lesson to cover his chin. After that fight, Khan took on Oshin Fagan. Khan was just beating him up like anything. The Fagan Team couln't take it so they tnrew in the towel. The ref stopped the fight before they threw it. Khan fought Barerra in March. Barerra got the wrong side of the clash of heads bit that wasn't anyone's fault. Khan spotted the cut that formed and then punched it til it hurt!!!!!!!!!! Khan won the fight. smiley Khan then proved to everyone that he is a world champion by lasting full 12 rounds and winning on points against andreas kotelnik. Khan is the best british boxer. He is the youngest to win a world title. He's only 22 years old.
Amir Khan might get a new promoter to get bigger fights in America. That's where the big fights are. Khan will become a great fighter with Freddie Roach. He is the best trainer. He changed Amir Khan completely. magic

Bloke with a similar issue to Khan: John Ruiz. Got canned in 19 seconds by David Tua. Came back and won the WBA title at heavyweight and took on a LOT of big names: Holyfield 3 times, Toney, Rahman, Oquendo, Valuev, Golota, Jones Jr, Johnson & Chagaev. None of them put him down. I knowtheir styles are very different (as is their size and overall talent), but it shows that if you get caught cold by a big puncher you're going to sleep. You can't tell me all those big names can't punch???

If he fights his way to becoming the WBA's mandatory, then he will have to fight him or vacate.

Prescott is unlikely to elevate himself to that position in the rankings though if he continues to lose to mediocre fighters.

Excellent point.

I was away over the weekend, caught the fight in a bar but seem to have missed most of the Khan bashing.

Personally I thought it was a good performance from Khan, but once again I find myself annoyed at it being reported as something it wasn't. Once again journalist's are over the top in praise of Khan and blow more smoke up the casual boxing fan who believes him to the best thing since sliced bread.

The first two, possibly 3 rounds, I thought Khan looked sharp and like he might really look to impress. Then in either the 3rd or 4th he got caught by Kotelnik and he ran the rest of the fight, it worked fine and he picked the slower champion off fairly easily. It was far from a sensational/amazing/inspiring performance amongst other ridiculous over the top adjectives thrown out, but it was a sound performance.

Kotelnik isn't great, but he isn't bad, and Khan dealt with him well. I still think he's a long way off the top level and it'll be a long time until he faces anyone at the top.

First the Barrera joke fight, followed by beating Kotelnik "worst champion out there" seemingly next up is Erik Morales who's never been to 140, hasn't fought for 2 years and lost his last 4 fights, his last winning coming over Manny Pacquiao no fewer than 4 years ago!

Khan has a long way to go to win me over, and he's certainly not going the right way about it.

which media, or to be clear, how much 'praise' has Khan actually received ?

The headline on the BBC, immediately after the win, was of the post-match interview. sky news, that's sky, 'broke' the news 20 minutes later, making their boast every 10 minutes on the adverts a little more than a mockery.

There was no live text for the event, despite every british boxer in a world title, being covered by the bbc in this fashion.

anyhow, well done Khan, i'm sure beyond the cliches, his 'doubters' know he's a champion. maybe his 'attitude' is another thing people dislike about him, er, he's a boxer!

hand speed won amir the fight.

slight concern when he moves forward, seems to put too much weight over his front front some times- just thinking if he fought a fighter with good lateral movement, rather than an upright/solid defence such as kotelnik, he might encounter some damaging counter punches. a la hatton's first knock down v. pbf.
against a straight line fighter like kotlenik his speed was enough to avoid any hooks coming back.

didn't think khan landed half as much as the sky commentators were banging on about - their sycophantic commentary was a bit too much imo. but that was more down to an excellent kotelnik defence i reckon. was impressed with kotelnik's defence against a much quicker puncher.

all in all a good win against a very solid fighter. i wish khan all the best, hope he keeps taking tough fights now too...

I have to say after watching hundreds of boxing matches over the years. Amir Khan is a good fighter...however I doubt he will ever be a great fighter.
He is easily hit and when he meets a tough world class fighter...then I think he will be exposed HOWEVER good luck to him-hes British and doing a good job.

Khan won't be universally respected until he fights Prescott again, where is Prescott now? If I was Prescott I would be thinking why am I not the WBA champion I beat the current champion!! Khan is protected by Warren and if he fights a real top fighter he will lose.

prescott got beaten in his last fight, on points.

he got lucky against Khan, his early flurry worked, yyet it could easily have not.

take the champions league final; utd came racing out of the blocks, bombarded the Barca goal, failed to capitalise, and ultimately were outclassed.

i believe Khan has learnt alot from that defeat, and if he can garner some power, to complement the tactical nous shown against kotelnik, i believe he'll come out on top.

A victory over Prescott would silence a lot of his domestic critics and perhaps give him the leverage to fight for more titles with the country actually behind him.

At present, the fact Prescott is losing fights to men Khan would most probably beat means nothing to Khan haters...
