The Open - Day 4

The Open
comment on the article

The final day of what has been an incredible Open is here.

Can Tom Watson complete a fairytale victory, will Matthew Goggin finish top of the leaderboard, can Ross Fisher end the British major drought or will he be called home to witness the birth of his first child, or will someone else lift the Claret Jug this evening?

Westwood was unlucky on 15. His putts on 16 and 17 were hardly disappointing and did everything but go in and he just went for glory with his putt to win on the last! However he wouldnt have bettered 2 under for those playoff holes so Im not sure he could have won the playoff anyway!! As soon as Watson missed his putt to win the event was over. Great Open because of Tom and win or lose he has lifted us all.

Cink winning - it feels like Father Christmas has died....

You might think it superstitious nonesense but I watched Tom Watson being interviewed by Hazel Irvine in one of the earlier rounds. The Claret Jug was on a table beside him and as he gave his answers he picked it up and held it for a moment.
I couldn't believe it,what was he thinking of?By all means gaze upon it and dream it could be yours but never touch it untill you've won it.
I remember Jimmy White holding one of the handles of the trophy before the final of the 1984 World Championship against Davis for the photographers and Davis refusing to do the same untill he had won it.Jimmy is still yet to win it!!

Westwood bottled it.
Watson showed his true class and was so unlucky on 18. Just goes to show that players in their prime 30 years ago can compete with the 'technology boys of today'.
I watched it in my golf club and everyone was routing for Watson and Westwood. Sadly though, I think Westwood will never win a major, he is far too similar to Monty ( except Westwood is a gent ). Westwood like Monty has the game, but not the nerve.
Was a massive anti-climax. Like someone said before that Cink did not have the pressure of leading, that is right, but that is also golf and anything can happen. One thing is for sure though, Tiger Woods will be back with a bang!!

I'm sorry but the atmosphere at Turnberry for a last day at an Open was abysmal. Other than the standard cheering on the last hole there seemed no electricity on the course and on the 16th and 17th the crowd was the most sparse that I have seen for years in a major Championship. I'm sorry but great as he was Tom doesn't have the charisma of a Nicklaus, Palmer,Ballesteros- not his fault, just one of those things. As for Cink, another nice God fearing Yank but with no pulling power. Like him or loath him without Woods in the competition the Open didn't have it for me. Lets hope for normal service resumed at St Andrews. One final unrelated point- why does the public seem to have a love affair with Montgomery? Is there a more miserable, bad tempered git in Pro golf? Always finding an excuse, nitpicking with fellow pros and spectators alike - he makes Victor Meldrew seem positively happy.

I agree with jimboo about westwood and watson.Obviously i am most gutted about westwood because i stood to win £230.When he went 2 shots clear with that eagle you could sense the pressure starting to affect him as he started missing the fairways with his teeshots. He will never get a better chance of winning a major and he has not won for a long time now.He is 36 years old so should have been experienced enough to get the job done. I won't be putting any more money on him in majors.

cink is no different from westy - he just had the timing on his side- that one win will chance a man- and that win can be because of another reason..

watson in my opinion won the open for cink.. if he wasnt 3 under on the tee westy would have probally made the par- i know its ifs and buts, but we could have put cink in this catergory(best not to win a major- with garcia and westy)

at least one of them one- shame it wasnt a european- even more of a shame it wasnt a brit and even more of a shame it wasnt westy..

becuase from this point on you have to wonder if westy can keep this sort of play up, and i feel if any englishman is gonna do it within the next couple of years it will be fisher..

even though westwood is arguably the best golfer(bar short game and putting)- in the world..

this one would have huret him the most- and we will see, but lets not call him a bottler- he is a great player, without doubt the best brit in terms of ability since faldo..

Lee Westwoods bogie at the last will hurt him for a while. Not as much as it would have if he had left his first putt 1" short and dead on line only to see Tom Watson par to win the open.
Every golfer who competed will look back at the week and say "if only" this or that happened, or didn`t.
Lee is still one of the most consistent players, tee to green, in the world and being a young man will surely get another chance in the future.
