Good Times Ahead?

Premier League Birmingham City
comment on the article

With all the recent transfer activity and all the work going on off the pitch at St. Andrews, I have a real feeling of optimism for the first time in a good few years.

You have to look at some of the signings - Dann, Johnson, Benitez and Hart - as being young, talented and with the potential for big futures. Combined with the experience of Espinoza, Bowyer, Carr and possibly Ferguson I think we have a good blend and at last some real pace and intelligence at the hart of the defence. All good teams have a good backbone - and Hart, Dann, Johnson, Carsley, Benitez - COULD be just that.

Despite the lack of faith in the board by many Blues fans, I think it is fair to say that they are certainly giving this Premier League assult their full backing. I can even see cracks developing in many of the 'anti-board' crews' attitude of late. The ground development, new screen and scoreboard, new pitch surround etc will give us all a stadium to be proud of - and let's face it, the lack of a scoreboard on it's own has long been an embarresment !

Clubs that do well and prosper tend to be those that are together from fans to players to management and to the board - and this is where I think we can really see things coming together this season. The squad had a real air of togetherness last season despite the often heavy criticism thrown thier way. Eck is forming a team in his own mould with good backing from the powers - another must to turn out a successful side.

I just hope that the fans can find the funds to get down to support the team as St. Andrews was electric last season against the Wolves. This type of support will really make a difference next year - just take Stoke as an example. Roll on August 19th when Portsmouth roll into town to face the new-look Blues!

So what do others think - all signs are good for next season and beyond ? Or am I just wearing my ever-glowing shirt of optimism and loyalty when it comes to the mighty Birmingham City F.C?

Keep Right On - and see you on the 19th August !!!

Birmingham "Clinched" the deal???? meaning???? Its not as if 50 clubs have been queuing up to get his signature. He is not wanted any longer here in scotland, fallen below average in terms of performance, physically spent.....and big Eck has done rangers a favour and gave them 1Mio into the empty kitty - Good riddance!!!

DS must be desperate to sell his share of St Andrews ,
talking about a 90k a week man ,the man who never was according to his agent ,
lets face it they do the same every year just to sell season tickets , and most of us fall for it,even me, they said buy your season ticket in march and get a good discount , lets take a closer look , in march it was doubtful if we would get promotion , and lots of us bought our season tickets , along with a promise of being given away travel membership free , but they never told people who booked over the phone that you had to fill in a form,
a friend of mine was told that all the FREE memberships where sold out , how can you sell something thats supposed to be free , well whos to blame , it must be a poor uncaring board , kro.

Whichever way you look at it the only reason Prem teams can pay a pittance for players (i dont include Barry Ferguson in this because he isnt a young player anymore) is because of the SPL itself, some players in the Prem only need a handful of good games and their worth 30 Million plus, in the SPL no matter how good they are they are going to get valued at next to nothing. James McCarthy is being touted for 1 Million pounds, which is peanuts for someone like him, if he had been playing in England, France, Spain, Portugal, etc... he'd be worth 10 Mil plus

Great article, which for me hits the nail directly on the head.

I'm so stupidly optimistic for this season it's untrue.

Manchester United fan in peace:

I´ve always had a soft spot for the Blues. Without doubt, i hope you lot retain you PL status. You´re a sleeping giant of a team, that imo are now where you should always be.

Good luck for the season lads. smiley

As a Glasgow Rangers man for 1.5 million Barry Ferguson is a good steal he lacks neither heart, effort or midfield skill and I am glad Big Eck has taken him. Fans have loved him over his years of service to Rangers and I wish him and my second English team all the best this season. Looking forward to keeping tabs on your results. Best wishes from Scotland.

In my opinion, Barry Ferguson is a fantastic signing for Birmingham City and he will be a key figure when trying to stave off the threat of relegation from St Andrews. A player I admire due to his workmanlike attitude and never say die approach, he epitomizes everything good about the modern day footballer. Of course, people are going to point to that ridicules episode towards the back end of his career at Ibrox but I feel it should have been forgiven and forgotten.

A player who has worked with Alex McCleish before during his time as Scotland manager, he will know exactly what is required at the top level. Having captained his country with a wealth of experience behind him, Ferguson is a leader and will bring an added voice to the Birmingham dressing room. For sure, he is 30 years of age but I feel he is both a short and long term option in the engine room.

Having already experienced top flight football in this country during his ill fated spell with Blackburn Rovers, he has that phycological edge of knowing what he needs to do to improve his standard in this country. Hopefully he can stay fit all season as he will be a driving force in that Birmingham spine. Good luck.
