59 year old golfer leading the open till late in the day prove what a lot of us have been saying all along that Tiger has won his majors playing against journeyman golfers who have no clue how to win a major like Casey,Donald,Westwood,Rose,Poulter and the rest of the European so called superstars.
How many more majors would the likes of both Watson and Nicholas have won if the opposition was of the calibre tiger faces.
Imagine any of those guys i mention being in contention for a major at the age of 59,they cant even win at their peak.

Tom Watson may be 59 years old but he continues to be a very good links golfer. Its one of the great things about golf that you can compete for a long period of time. Look at Greg Norman at last years open, and Kenny perry at the masters. Even the older golfers are more than capable of putting good rounds together, they just won't do it as regularly as they use to. I actually believe the depth in golf is higher than it use to be, and many more golfers are capable of winning a major than they were in Watson's era. I think people get a touch of nostalgia when looking back to past eras, its easy to remember the great players, but less people remember the quality of the lesser players of the period.

Golf is such an unpredictable game that I really don't know why people ever bother to predict the winner. Tom Watson had a good day, but he has to to have another 3 good days to even stand a chance of getting in the top ten. But obviously Watson is a good links player. He has won five open championships. That's better than anyone bar some bloke called Harry Vardon who played at the beginning of the 20th century. The great jack Nicklaus only won three opens.

Im 44 and play off 22(no laughing ha ha) so if I practice every day, then in 15 yrs i should be a contender??????Just a slight problem of Mr Watson having won a barrow load of silverware long before his 59th Birthday. We can all but dream.
It was a pleasure to see him play today.

I doubt Watson will win but he sure gave Garcia and the rest of the contenders a lesson in course management and the way to play links golf. He has to be the greatest exponent of the art since the days when golf was first played. Good luck to him and may the youngsters watch the highlights tonight and pick up a few tips!!!

"He has won five open championships. That's better than anyone bar some bloke called Harry Vardon who played at the beginning of the 20th century."

Peter Thomson - Open Champion in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958, and 1965. They mentioned on the commentary today a couple of times how much of an achievement it would be if Padraig could win 3 straight Open Championships and it would be as it would make him the first person to do so since Thomson, the only man to achieve that feat in the 20th century.

Watson is rightly regarded as the best links player in the 'modern' era, but Thomson shouldn't be forgotten about when that discussion comes up ok

(I assume you are joking when you say some bloke called Harry Vardon yikes )
