Whilst I understand it's important to have an English spine to a Premier league team why does O'Neil predominantly sign English players???

It's no secret that English players are technically inferior to players on the continent. Look at when England played Spain recently, it was painfully obvious.

In the modern game you have to look at players from all over Europe and not just players from the country where the league is based.

I can't see Villa ever making it into the top four with this short sighted approach to transfers.

Downing's a good player. He's got a lot more than just a sweet left foot.

Tuncay would be a great signing for Villa. I think he's a fantastic footballer and I'm surprised Champions League clubs haven't gone for him. He's a class act.

I personally think MON buys English because he knows they are going to be able to compete in the prem. technique is all well and good but you have to have the work ethic and be of the correct character to play under MON at villa.

I also feel it's a bit of a gesture towards the FA who chose Steve McLaren over MON for the England job. Many people say it's daft that MON would do this but all you have to do is look at the players purchased only a few are foreign.

That's a fair comment O'Neil's English core.

Don't get me wrong by giving English players a chance he is doing something very unique and should be commended for doing so.

But I just think you boys are missing a a trick and ignoring some better options that could be available to you.

I know this example is very extreme but you boys are paying the same for Downing as what United paid for Ronaldo.

I think like Nicky Shorey and Marlon Harewood have been bought because of their nationality and not their ability.

These sort of players aren't good enough for a club of Villa's stature and had you looked abroad you could have got players of a much higher quality for the same money. Yes it might take time for them to adapt but give me technique and ability over nationality any day.

O'Neil could also be buying British because it's so difficult to buy top class players from abroad.

He's building at Villa and he's bringing in players who are easier to get.

Maybe in time, he'll start bringing more and more foreign players in.

People are still missing the point. The idea behind the English players is commercial. Villa are becoming the second team of choice for most fans. That means we'll have a greater following than most of the foreign stuffed teams and having a 'follwing' is having people willing to go to games, buy shirts and promote and support your side. I'm pretty sure this is what the plan is - make us second team of choice and like most fickle fans they'll follow us when we win something. It's long term but Man U did it as a result of the Munich aircrash and we can do it by being English.
