Beattie eyes England return

Stoke City
comment on the article

Stoke striker James Beattie has his "fingers crossed" he can earn his way back into the England set-up with a good season for Tony Pulis's Potters.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foo...

The 31-year-old won all his five caps when at Southampton and has been out of the international scene for six years.

However his seven goals in 16 matches last season, following his January move, helped Stoke to stay up with relative ease.

Do you think Beattie has a place in Fabio Capello's plans? Does he offer a viable alternative to Emile Heskey?

Beattie has presence and is a better alternative to Heskey as he scores a lot more goals.

i think Bettie is very under rated and he could work well with rooney/owen/heskey and good luck to him

As I'm sure every Blades fan knows, Beattie can score penalties! He's got to be worth a ticket to South Africa just for that! Hopefully somebody can give the actual figures but I'm sure most of the goals Beattie scored for the Blades were from set pieces.

Look its nothin against stoke i like your club good fans, ur not a big club yet but do have the potential seem to have money etc, i do think Everton are the best team, we were in champions league 5 years back, and uefa cup 3 out of last 4 years, if thats not a big club wow must take alot to be one, aslo Everton are the 5th best team in England, i really feel back to back 5th finishes prove that, we are the 5th best performing team in the whole of england over the last 24 months FACT

I genuinely can't understand how players like Heskey, Crouch, Carlton Cole and Beattie are preferred over Kevin Davies. Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney would have a field-day working off him and, although I don't think Beckham offers much, it gives him someone to aim at in the area who can actually score headers (unlike Heskey, who spends most of the match rolling around the penalty area, and Crouch, who always performs his best impersonation of a mannequin being hurled out of a high-spped train).

For evidence, just watch the Bolton vs Chelsea game. How can any English forward who got the better of Terry and Carvalho NOT be called up to the England squad?

If you rate Carvalho then you need to see a doctor as alls hes ever had is hype but so did the Titanic and there appears to be a similarity in that respect.

I dont necessarily rate Carvalho, but he plays regualrly at the heart of a solid defence of a title-challenging team, and is a member of an international squad that should be competing for the World Cup.

To be fair carvalho is one of the best defenders in the league!
And beattie has done more than enough to at least be considered for a call up.

No, just no.

He was never international class in his so-called 'prime' in his 20s at Southampton. At 31 for Stoke he's even further from being good enough.

Thankfully, Capello would never pick a limited journeyman plodder like Beattie.
