England's women retain Ashes

The Ashes England
comment on the article

England's women have defended the Ashes for the third consecutive series following a draw in the one-off Test match in Worcester.

Charlotte Edwards and Beth Morgan were England's saviours, summoning up the spirit of Monty Panesar and Jimmy Anderson to bat out the final day after stuttering at 39-3.

It caps off an incredible year for Charlotte Edwards' side, who are already world 50-over and Twenty20 champions.

Have your say on their achievements - and what England's men could learn from their female counterparts...

well done, but really one test doesnt give either team a fair chance of showing what they are capable of

@sisterkaren

According to an interview on 5 Live Sport Extra yesterday, the England Women's setup was up for a longer series, but the Aussie women (or their reps) felt that the tour was already a very long one and that multiple tests would have been too much.

It is a shame, but as long as it's their decision.

Fantastic achievements by the England lasses, it's been a pleasure following them this year. I hope the media coverage of the women's game continues to grow.

Shame there is not another mini-series for them.

But they've earned a rest and the Team of the Year accolade.

Congratulations

The team & staff are due at 10 Downing Street tonight (Tuesday) for a reception. Our inspirational captain, Charlotte Edwards, could well be called on to advise Gordon on long term strategy & short term tactics, since she is the undoubted master of both. smiley

Flowers, applause, admiration and approbation to ALL in this squad, which has demonstrated to the world that for all the necessity of strong individual performance, team spirit is often the clinching factor. (Oh - And throw in a bit of shopping for Rosalie Birch! hehehehehe smiley )

Time now for BBC cricket to get out and around the clubs and counties, bringing us news & opinion of what's going on in women's cricket now the international season has been put to bed for a while. YOUTH ESPECIALLY!

The series was only one Test long because the Australians, some of which have jobs to get back to, were able to stay any longer - having arrived before the World Twenty 20 in early June.
Next year there will most likely be no Tests because its New Zealand and they don't play Tests. India, who England are due to tour this winter, are interested in playing Tests. The rest of the nations are proably not (yet) strong enough to play England in Tests.
It was remarkable, given how little multi-day cricket they play, that England and Australia managed to produce such a superb Test match.

England Women's cricket team for SPOTY Team Of Year - um, nice thought but the reality is that the men's team would (only) need to win the Ashes to win SPOTY. That, unfortunately, reflects how women's sport is treated.
SPOTY Team Of Year has run since 1960 and the ONLY case of a women's team winning it outright is in 1969 (Athletics). The Davies and Whiteman Cup teams shared it in 1978. Torvill shared it with Dean in 1982 and 1983. The 2000 Olympic and Paralympic teams contained women and the Showjumping Team winners of 1979 might have contained a women.

"Have your say on their achievements - and what England's men could learn from their female counterparts..."
I'm sure the England women's team would be embarrassed at suggestion that they could teach the men's team anything. The men are all full time professionals and have to face upward of 8 countries at that level. The women are not all professional, in fact none are actually full time professional, and only Aus, NZ and India are real competition in tournements.
The women's team has done billiantly and deserve coverage and support. However, lets not get into the silly game of using their wonderful success as some sort of banner to wave in the faces of the men's team.
