How Can We Win The Ashes?

The Ashes England
comment on the article

Great ending to an awful match, from England's point of view.

We scored 435 in the first innings, largely down to the Aussie's poor bowling, our batsman weren't anything special, as proven by the lack of centuary's. It'll be harder again once Brett Lee returns for the Aussie's.

Then our bowlers produce a shocking performance in the Aussie's innings, Swann was ok but not at his best, Freddy was economical but didn't look as threatening as could be from a wicket taking point of view, Monty was as usual very average, Anderson also average and Broad was awful - I'm sorry but despite his good batting, he's so easy to score runs against as a bowler, i feel he lets the attack down, especially when Freddy's at the other end. I don't see this so called 'potential' either. He's probably better off training as a full time batsman, as he has more potential in that department than in bowling in my opinion

Then the second innings, i fancied a draw, then we concede 2 wickets in the last 7 overs before play, despite barely getting 2 wickets in 2 days, then at that point i thought they'd just crumble in a typical English fashion.

Then come Day 5, KP doesn't exactly cover himself in glory in a high pressure situation, and once again Cook fails, which is what is expected, personally i think he'd be better down the order.

Bopara has failed in this test match, but i think he's got natural ability and will come good, you could put this performance down to nerves.

I just find it pathetic the way we crumble, and it seems to happen more frequently to us than any other team in world cricket, you'd almost guarantee if that was Australia in the same positions trying to save the game they'd have done so with ease.

I don't understand why players feel the need to play shots when we have no chance of a result, if our players were more naturally talented then i'd understand but they're not, they're average.

On a more positive note the bottom order looked like they had some steel about them, Collingwood has never been my favourite player, but when England are danger Collingwood tends to come into his element, he definitely took the right approach today and he produced a superb display of resilience, test match style.

The bottom order also deserve a shout out, Broad scored just 14 but used up 71 balls, Swann produced a fantastic 31 in the circumstances using up 63 balls.

Jimmy + Monty put on a fantastic end to the match, both held their nerve when the pressure was on and both put on a brilliant end for the home fans.

This was a test of 4 and a half day's of average/awful cricket from England, a very ordinary contest from the spectators point of view, although the last half a day made up for the lack of action considerabley, you could say it was reminiscent of the 2005 Ashes series, the one which they endlessly refer too.

Moving onto the second test i feel we must drop Broad and bring in Harmison who looked dangerous in the Lions match.

I still think this series is a lost cause, unless we can grind out 3 draws, possibly rain assisted and steal a win with the Aussie's not turning up at all, winning the series 1-0 (Lol)

But seriously, i just don't see how we can win this series, what changes do you feel need to be made?

Personally i have no confidence in this team at all, the quality just isn't there, my only slightly more realistic hope of winning is the Aussie's not turning up.

The Aussie top order looks weak. Hussey only got 3. The rest of their top order averaged 127, he must be really bad. We should look to exploit this weakness.

And then get my wife to bowl at the others. She can bowl line and length, and eventually the Aussies will give up due to her constant nagging (about whatever dipleases her plus aforementioned L&L).

No man can stand more than 2 hours, so this should limit them to say an average of 60 per batsmen. If my Cat (ginger tom & very sly) can then wheedle out the lower order (they will be out of form, certainly by the later tests as they may not have to bat til end August), we may bowl them out twice for c 1200. Then we could nick this series with a few lusty blows from Freddie and a range of audacious sweeps from outside the return crease from KP. ( I think Johnson was practicing this line of attack today for later in the series).

Cook and Bopora at the moment are walking wickets. Trouble is we have no other clear talent in the whole country. Bell failed throughout 2005 but carrying two batters may be too much to handle.

In the bowling department,Anderson and Broad are both ineffectual but as almost everyone thinks the sun shines out of Jimmy's bottom despite a quite average test record he is sure to play all 5 tests, finish with an average in excess of 35 yet again and still be applauded as England's best bowler.

I'd pick Sidebottom,Onions and maybe Harmisson along with Flintoff and one spinner for Lords.

As an Aussie I'd say your best chance for victory lies with Ponting. Sure he scored 150, but the fact you got away with a draw is down to his poor decisions. Had no clue regarding field setting in your first innings, and to use a part time spinner instead of a good fast swing bowler when you need only 1 more wicket? Ridiculous.

Blender, I think you are being a little ungenerous to Ravi Bopara as his second innings dismissal was a very poor leg before decision by Billy Doctrove. I saw it real time and the ball hit him above the knee-roll and should never have been given out. Hawkeye also showed that the ball was going over the stumps.

In the bowling department, I expect that Monty Panesar and Stuart Broad will be dropped for Lord's. Hopefully they will bring in Steve Harmison and Graham Onions.

I would also drop James Anderson but, as you suggested, they will stick with him because he was rated in the World's Top Ten bowlers.

I have to say that Kevin Pietersen would be out of my team as well. I'd go with Owais Shah or Ian Bell.

England have been strugglinh for a few years and I am shocked at the lack of batting talent.

To win the Ashes, Engand need Pieterson to go mad and for another batsman such as Cook to start grinding out some big scores.

They also need a pace bowler to start producing something as they seem to have gone back to the bad old days of England teams where they have three or four ineffective seamers in the team.

I fear a whole litter of ginger toms & a couple of indignant wives would only bring us up level with the Aussies – more is needed if we are to regain the ashes! Alas, I have no answers.
