Congratulations to Israel

Davis Cup

comment on the article

Earlier today Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram won a marathon doubles match against Marat Safin and Igor Kunitsyn to finish the tie and take Israel 3-0 up against the two-time former Davis Cup winners Russia.

This is the first time Israel has reached the semi-finals of the Davis Cup, and they will face either Spain away or Germany at home in September.

A surprise result for Russia, who have been in the semi-finals or better of the DC for the past five years in a row; however the Israeli players fully deserved their victory with some quality tennis.

It was wonderful to watch the spirit not only of the players and the whole team, but the support they got from the supporters (who, as usual maybe went a little overboard sometimes in their enthusiasm). A little country, but with great heart. Couldn't be prouder and hope they can go at least one step further.

Absolutely brilliant!
This is a milestone for Israeli sport.
Of course this was a weak Russian team but when a country with some really low ranked players can overcome any sort of Russian team there has to be something special in it.

Israel also faced a weak Swedish side in the round before. Soderling was injured and didn`t play and Sweden played Thomas Johansson (who has since retired) and Andreas Vinciguerra. Sweden were so desperate for players Stefan Edberg almost made a comeback. Also of course it was an empty stadium at Malmo. So they have been pretty lucky with both ties.

Looks like Israel are facing Spain after Ferrero came to the rescue in the 5th rubber.

I think Spain will be at home against Israel.

Surprising results with USA and Argentina getting knocked out too

Czech could stand a good chance this year, even if they don't win it it'll be interesting to see how Berdych performs in this kind of competition. It's looking like Spain will have to see out the tournament without a fully fit Nadal too, so it's a chance for them to sound out the depth of their team
