New Contract for Nabil El-Zhar

Premier League Liverpool

Liverpool have awarded Nabil El-Zhar a contract extension until 2012 after breaking into the first team last season.

The man Rafa Benitez refers to as a "lucky charm" made 19 first team appearances last season and is the strongest hint yet that Benitez will start to blood more reserves, with Jay Spearing and Stephen Darby also given longer deals recently.

Although featuring little in the title chase, El-Zhar featured as a super sub regularly before christmas and played a huge part in Liverpool's numerous comebacks, with Liverpool finding the net four times in the final quarter of games in which he was brought on.

The tricky winger showed far more of his ability to run at players last term and will hope to consolidate his emergence last season with a regular run in the first team.

Indeed, if his development continues, he could be the first youngster brought through successfully since the start of the Benitez era.

The reason why he has been offered a contract is that football teams need stability.
Football teams need also to nurture players, because aside from Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid, teams have budgets.

Liverpool don't have a great deal of money at the moment, so it's a little bit pointless people saying "We should buy Villa, Silva, Ribery"

We don't have the money. Simple as that.
Why don't you buy a Ferrari?

this new contract should go some way to help fend off the inevitable big money offer from real madrid.

I do not feel El Zhar is good enough to craft out a successful career at Anfield. If Peter Crouch, Fernando Morientes, Robbie Keane and Djibral Cisse all leave under shadows, then El Zhar should hardly set the world a light. Hardly a household name, I feel he is a reserve team player who only played in the first team last season due to a lack of other options. Along with David N'Gog, they are not good enough to deliver the Premier League title to Merseyside for the first time in a long time.

But, I may be proved wrong. With the Reds competing in every competition on offer to them next season, they will need every fit player available to go into battle. El Zhar should see some action, but whether he is out of his depth is another question. I do not see anything special in him and I do not feel he will make the grade under Benitez at Anfield. For all you Reds fans, I am sure you hope I am proved wrong.

I kind of see El Zhar potentially developing into a 'benayoun' type player, who as well as contributing to our first team now and then will also fetch us 7-8mill once the time is right.
