Stage eight - Andorra La Vella to St Girons

Tour de France
comment on the article

Yesterday's first mountain stage of the 2009 Tour de France did not lack excitement or drama.

Alberto Contador's stunning late surge moved him back above team-mate and rival Lance Armstrong in the General Classification and sparked more debate - Lance claimed he didn't follow Contador because it would have helped their rivals, but only he really knows whether he could have kept up with the super Spaniard even if he had wanted to.

Contador didn't quite do enough to get the yellow jersey - that now belongs to Italy's Rinaldo Nocentini - while a special mention should go to Britain's Bradley Wiggins, who stayed with the likes of Armstrong, Cadel Evans and Andy Schleck on the gruelling climb up Arcalis and is now fifth overall.

The race is still in the Pyranees today, starting in Andorra La Vella and finishing, 176.5km later, at St Girons.

We start with a tough hike up to the summit of Port d'Envalira and, after a long descent, there are two more climbs to Col de Port (at the 102km mark) and Col d'Agnes (132.5km) before a glide to the finish.

No mountain-top finish today, and but still plenty to look forward to and it will be interesting to see how Wiggins fares again.

Enjoy, and let me know your thoughts about this stage and the overall state of play in Le Tour.

Yes, Sandy deserved it for clawing his way back to the group on the descent. Oh well, that's football, erm cycling. smiley

Tomorrow will be a good day, but I'll have to wait for the highlights. wah

Aside from Pereiro, David Le Lay is gone today - a fact which will bring tears to the eyes of some, no doubt.

Agritubel lost 2 today, with Eduardo Gonzalo abandoning as well.

Koldo Fernandez was elminated...

Wiggins has been amazing so far, the last 2 stages he was well up there with some legendary climbers. Millar helped out well today as well.

Good stuff!

Rinaldo will struggle to keep yellow tommorow in my opinion.

wah

It also means I officially can't win the tourchampion competition overall, as I spotted someone with exactly the same team as me except they had Voeckler instead of Lelay.

So sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Dj, but it had to be done - I wouldn't want you to get that kind of news at the start of tomorrow's stage.

Is there an actual prize for the winner, or just bragging rights?

For the winner of the entire thing? It doesn't say anything about contestants from abroad, but

- 1st place: two VIP arrangements at the prologue of the Vuelta in Assen (valued €500)
- 2nd & 3rd place: set of shirt and shorts GIRO La Gazzetta dello Sport (valued €135)
- 4th-7th place: Jan Janssen and Joop Zoetemelk dvd Tour de France (valued €20)
- 8th to 15th place: set Wieler Magazine* cycling gloves (valued €10)
- 15th to 20th place: set Wieler Magazine cycling socks (valued €5)

Winner of the 606 league gets nothing but bragging rights and a smug smile however smiley

Just bought six new geese for the field. Named them all after leading contenders (even though they are all females). Let them loose over a long hilly course to the fed tub. I can confirm that Lance triumphed by some 4".
