Stage six: Girona - Barcelona

comment on the article

Morning all,

Here we go again. Stage six and we're in Spain for the day as the Tour visits Girona for the first time.

It's technically a flat stage but there are five climbs of varying degrees of difficulty - three cat fours and three cat threes.

Three intermediate sprints along the 181.5km ride to Barcelona as well.

Probably not a day for the pure sprinters as there is a sharp 60m incline in the last 2km.

What are the chances of another breakaway victory today? Or will the peloton be more wary? And who you backing for the win.

The live text commentary will be with you shortly, in the meantime, let us know your thoughts...

He was one of the High Roaders who kissed the tarmac together with Rogers.

No one stayed with Rogers to see him home, by the way, so I expect he might be leaving us here in Spain. Did your super-Belgian telly give you any info on him?

Astana may have been at the head of the peloton for some of the time but again I don't think Millars GC position was the reason. They probably wanted to control the pace and ensure they were up front and out of trouble in what could have been tricky conditions. Maybe they even had outside ambitions of a stage win.

The peloton aren't going to give stupid amounts of time away to decent riders who are not too far down on the current GC for fear of a repeat of 2006 but in the end all the hard work today was done by teams interested in the stage win. Thats why Millars break failed - not his GC position.

I left my super-Belgian telly for super-Belgian dinner I'm afraid. I didn't catch the end, but they didn't mention him much after the crash.
I'm as clueless as you all.

I can tell you that Boonen didn't have to go to hospital though, so he's fairly ok.

Good news for Tom, then.

Bad news for England - both Oz batsman are about to get their tons. Let's hope I put a hex on them with this.

100 up for Katich...

Ponting next.

It was good, yes. The rain added some spice, and we all love a long breakaway. Hope you get your connection back eventually so you can see the highlights.

And Hincapie said Rogers was MRI-ed and nothing is broken

Interesting, I had forgotten that Astana got on the front of the bunch but I don't think they really tried to reel Millar in, just keep the gap respectable. To be honest I think it was a tactical move against Saxo, not against Millar. You will notice Saxo didn't go to the front o bring him back because they wanted rid of the yellow jersey before the first mountain stage but Astana would prefer one of the stronger teams having to defend the yellow jersey, hence being on the front.

Anyway, as Millar himself said it was full of heart but no head. The place to go should have been on or after the final climb, you can't go that far on your own against the peleton, looking for a sprint.

And what he said about all the straight roads into the finish, well David, that is why other riders do their homework smiley No matter the weather with 10 to 12 kms of downhill and straight roads it was always going to be tough for anyone to keep the heaving peleton away
