Republic of Ireland cult hero Gary Breen has taken steps towards his dream of becoming a football manager by becoming Barnet's player-assistant manager.

The 35-year-old, who has plenty of Premier League and international experience, played 22 times for the League Two club last season and he will continue playing when needed, although he plans to focus on his new duties.

As a player, Breen was linked to Inter Milan after a brilliant 2002 World Cup campaign. How far do you think Breen the coach can go?

Are Barnet fans happy to see Breen staying at Underhill for another season?

Couldnt you have chosen a better picture of him, he looks as though a defender is doing something unmentionable to him!!

Great news. Getting Breen back on board must be one of the most important signings of Barnet's close season. Well done Hendo. All the League Two-style long balls were rocket-propelled back up the field from his forehead when he was in the squad last year.

Hopefully this will benefit us this season. I hope Harrison, and now Breen, joining the backroom staff can help us finish in the top half. If they do half a good a job as Hendon did from becoming a player to a manager and we manage to keep O'Flynn and Adomah then I can't see why we won't have a good season.

"How far can Breen go as a coach?"

Well he has stated his desire to one day be a manager, which is clearly a step beyond being a coach, and I believe that given our chairman's preference for building a managed succession within the club Breen will be Barnet's next manager unless he chooses to go somewhere else first. I think it is this realisation that made him sign the deal. He has lots of contacts in the game, although one wonders whether they are of a low enough level to benefit Barnet, and his coaching and organisational skills rubbed off well last season especially on centre back partner Yakubu.

That said, I'm far more concerned with having Breen the player than Breen the coach at this stage. He was a rock last season and had a calming influence on the whole defence. With him signed on we now have a back 5 to equal almost any in the league.

Clearly a capacity for non-discript erudition has maligned my previous alacrite.
