Tommy Smith Circus

Championship Watford

The whole Tommy Smith issue is turning into a bit of a circus now and must be having an unsettling effect on Tommy himself and the team at large, not to mention putting Malky at a disadvantage in that he doesn't know if he'll be having to buy a replacement, which in turn will inevitably hamper pre-season to a certain extent given Tommy's pivotal input to the team in recent years.

Since Tommy has been and is so important to the team, as I've said before, I cannot see any point in selling him (even if his contract does expire next year) unless we desparately need the money now. Whatever we get for him will not exceed what we will lose if we get relegated and his loss runs the risk of just that. To all those people suggesting that we take £1.8m and pocket £0.8m whilst spending £1m on three or four half decent younger players - I can't see the point of that either unless we need even £1M that desparately. We've got a decent squad as it is, even if we lose a couple of other players. So, if we sell him it should only be because we have to.

Onto Bucky and Reading. This has gone on long enough. Ol' Brenda is saying he knows Tommy wants to come to Reading and Russo has rightly wondered aloud how he knows that. There are three possibilities:

1) He's lying
2) He's tapped Tommy up
3) He spoke to Tommy before he left, which means he knew he was going before we gave Reading permission to speak to him, which means Reading tapped him up.

If the club suspect either of the latter two they should and must report Reading to the FA.

If he's lying then it could be part of his mind games in an attempt to sign Tommy or just pure vindictiveness against Watford. I don't rule either out where he is concerned as the man seems to have no morals.

The club need to put an end to this now. If they are seriously considering accepting an offer from Reading for the right price they need to set Reading a deadline and tell them very clearly to put up or shut up.

If not, and this is the option I prefer, they should tell Rogers and Reading very clearly where to go.

"We all know Tommy isn't worth £1.8m"

To quote Syrus, "Everything is worth what it's purchaser will pay for it."

You only become the purchaser when you complete the deal. If we decide not to sell him at your valuation, that means he is worth more to our club than you are willing to pay.
Call us misguided if you will, but it's our prerogative.

If you are willing to pay £800k and we feel it's worth holding onto him, then he is worth more than £800k.

Besides, he must mean a lot to you, as you seem so desperate to come onto the Watford boards and talk about a player who is apparently overvalued.

We are admittedly doing likewise, but that is because we care about this player and do not want to see him leave.

Hang on....Berks Horn makes a serious and reasonable point. If Buck is so sure that Tommy wants to go to Reading, he cannot be sure unless there has been something underhand....or indeed maybe he is lying. Only other possibility is that a third party conveniently happened to mention that Tommy would like to go to Reading (i.e WolvesRoyal's point), in which case there's no tapping up and no lying. Either way, there seems to be some unnecessary stirring. It's a pity, but almost inevitable. Fair play to Russo though for the statement.

Points 1, 2 and 3 are all fair enough guesses. But how about

4) Tommy found out Brendan was leaving, and said 'I want to go to Reading too.'

Not impossible is it? If it's true Tommy wants to leave, it doesn't mean Brendan forced him want it.

does it matter. End of day we go to watch our clubs play football matches. All this talk about smith and brendan is getting so boring. I'm just looking forward to start of season and watching some football.

Not much chance of seeing any football with Brenda in charge VinRoyal! Look forward to much passing back and forth across the field in the style of a crab. smiley

Maybe at the away game we can teach the sideways chant to the eight Reading fans who haven't reverted to folling the ManYoo Yankies.

It really does look as if the board are getting rather fed up with Reading.

Good to see that they are sticking to their principles, and that Tommy is likely to be playing Saturday.

I would say show him your support, but he must know already what a favourite he is.

-----------------

the article is on the reading board. Ive come to comment on it because its current news for RFC

He doesnt mean a lot to me as you suggest, persoanlly i dont think we should be investing in a player who is only good enough for the championship (words of watford fans, not mine by the way)

Please dont have the arrogance to suggest where and what i should and shouldnt post on this site, these boards are for discussiona nd debate and thats what im doing
