Live - England v Australia day one

The Ashes
comment on the article

Ladies and gentlemen, the 2009 Ashes series is finally upon us.

After months of build-up, 1,396 days since England recaptured the famous urn to round off the series to end all series in 2005, and a fair fewer days since Australia wiped the smiles firmly off their faces in 2007, ye olde enemies face off again in the ultimate cricketing battle.

The setting is Cardiff, the atmosphere electric, and THE place (outside of TV, radio and, well, actually being there) to follow all the ins, outs, action and reaction is on our live text commentary.

Stevo and Dirsy are your hosts for the day so make sure you all get involved in a massive way as we all welcome the dawn of a new potentially sensational Ashes series.

Sing after me: "And did those feet, in ancient time..."

I think this is a fantastic pitch, it offers bounce and is spinning nicely. Agnew wrote this was a lifeless pitch, a bit like his commentary then. Swann looks fantastic and well played Andersson. This Aussie bowling line up looks quit average, they are really missing Lee.

Can someone explain to me how Matthew Hoggard would not have helped in this situation, and why the ECB decided to turf him out at the age of 31?

Okay, this is grim. To raise the spirits I'm trying to think of things the England squad ARE better than their Australian counterparts at, as cricket certainly isnt one of them.
With Cook and Broad matching up to Siddle and Pointing I can say with confidence that we're certainly prettier and I also reckon Freddie could do all of them at chess. Sadly this is all I have so far. Anyone think of more?

We are at least as good as them at football. Capello's best XI would draw the Aussies 1-1. At Wembley, anyway. So we can take pride in that.
