Stage Three: Marseille-La Grande Motte

Tour de France
comment on the article

Tour de France or Tour de Lance?

Neither.

I'm sure you agree that 2009 is all about Le Tour de Manx.

Yep, Isle of Man missile Mark Cavendish made his first mark on this year's Tour yesterday with a stunning sprint finish...and there could be more of the same today.

Monday's Stage Three takes us 196.5km from Marseille to La Grande Motte. It's likely to be a very windy route, but the finish is perfect for the pure sprinters in the field.

So, Cav will be going for another stage victory today - and, of course, he will be trying to keep hold of the green jersey too. If he manages it, he will be the first Briton to stay in green for more than a single day.

You can follow the day's action right here:

Don't forget to let me know how you think today will pan out too.

Christophe Le Mevel said that he was directly behind contador and that contador failed to latch on to the groups wheel when they broke away

"With regards to the person having a go that Lance isn't promoting his causes by avoiding the press and fans perhaps you should get out of the 20th century and see what Lance is doing on his own website. Everyday during the Giro and now the Le Tour he is dedicating each stage to a cancer survivor or victim. He is also providing updates via video and blogging on his progress and thoughts on the race. Furthermore I saw him giving an interview today outside his team bus after the race."

Indeed, I've been regularly reading his twitter feed these last few weeks. Lance is still the man even if he doesn't reach Paris in yellow. One of my all time sporting heros.

He obviously isn't doing a good job seen as im not aware of it. He could do it so much better by answering journos questions.

Having seen Armstrong's post race interview today shown on ITV4, does anyone seriously believe that LA (a) doesn't consider himself team leader and (b) thinks he isn't going to win?

Watch and learn everyone else, this guy is driven and will settle for nothing less than yellow in Paris. The Accountant now knows the score.

Cavsupporter, give it up. By the rules of the game, Armstrong, perhaps the most tested professional athlete in the world, has never come up positive. People have and will find ways to get around tests in the past, but you have to have the evidence. You can't cheat the rules and say guilty by hear say. Just before leaving Aspen, CO., LA tweeted that the tests for the year numbered 32. Positives 0. A coy move today by him, and you'd have to be a coy and tactical to win seven. Coy too, that Cav's parade around the opening TT. If your "the" team sprinter your not going to throw away you energy on a TT. As for those already crowning Lance the Tour winner on the 26th, still more unlikely than likely. If he does take Yellow tomorrow that would be grand for his cause and make big headlines plus buy him the protection needed to be competitive down the road, but I also don't expect to see Contador taking any pulls at the front to protect the jersey. He too, earned that with his TT performance.

I think some of the Cav fans need to calm down a bit. Yes he is a very good sprinter but we are 3 stages in when he crosses the finish line in Paris we will all start to shout about his achievements.

Remember another Brit Robert Miller won the King of the mountains and performed well on a number of tours, so lets not get carried away to quickly

Sorry I'm very new to this game and I'm wondering why Mark Cavendish is 142nd place overall if he has won 2 out of 3 stages. I'm probably being really stupid but I have no idea how it works

The general classification - the one that decides who gets to wear the yellow jersey - is basically just a table of who did the entire course in as little time as possible. The Tour started with a time trial on Saturday (15,5k on his own against the clock). Cavendish is not very good at this (Millar and Wiggins are) so he didn't try very hard so he could save energy for stages two and three. That's why he's so far behind now.
At the moment Cancellara (the greatest time trialist in the world) was the fastest to do all three stages, so he's wearing yellow.

Take a look at that thread, it's all explained in there.
