Magilton eyes first signing

comment on the article

Rangers are hoping to sign Argentine playmaker Alejandro Damian Faurlin.

The 22-year-old’s performances for Argentine side Instituto have sparked interest from a number of Italian clubs, but QPR will try to persuade him to join them.

He could feature for Rangers during pre-season, as could David Connolly who has been training with the club.

Connolly is a free agent after being released by Sunderland.

Jim Magilton has looked to Argentina before, signing Luciano Civelli for Ipswich last season, and John Gorman recently visited there on a scouting mission.

Following his return, an approach for Faurlin was made and the player is expected in London for talks this week.

If he does join Rangers, it may be on an initial year-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

It would be a similar deal to the one for Emmanuel Ledesma last summer and the agreed fee is likely to be similar too – around £3m, possibly slightly more.

Interesting. I'm mostly interested in David Connolly. If he can find form again, he'll be banging them in.
Why did he not play at all last season? Was he injured?

not sure why people on this thread think it would be a gamble...if Alejandro doesnt cost that much and can be signed on a reasonable contract then it's surely a low risk addition. i read some where that gorman was part on a south american scouting team at ipswich so chances are this is someone he's seen for a while and IMO if we are placing trust in JG should be seen as a welcome addition that could work in our favour (i mean when was the last time rangers bought a player that manager and asst manager had scouted and targeted?? - not since before GP's era). Also, i seem to remember Ipswich having some useful foreign players so I all for this approach.

Good point Zone1 , hopefully this is a role that JG will take over from Paladini and result in some sensible signings !

I think WBA2QPR3 was thinking back to last summer when it seemed virtually all of our signings were untried young prospects - I think that proved to be a failed experiment and wouldn't want to see that happen again.

But as zone1 says, as a one-off, and presumably well researched by JG, it seems a low-risk possibility - even if it is for yet another midfielder...

The David Connolly thing seems strange to me. Unless my maths are wrong he is 33 years old. Hardly one for the future then...

QPAAAAAAGH. Maths appear wrong June 6th 1977 makes him a couple of weeks over 32, maybe not one for the future but if he is good for this year....

Indeed I was Young Ashdown.

A mere 12 months ago we were wetting ourselves over nicking Parejo on loan from under noses of Arsenal and look how that turned out.

I'm all for flair, hell I am flair personified but it'll take more than a 22 year old Argie to get me believing this is the year.

Positive if late start to our signings.

If of course we sign him!

Connolly thing has shades of Tommassi. Knocking on, not match fit, used to be handy. Not sure thats' the answer either.

Our transfer policy always surprises me.

Gigi Di Canio, with his vast knowledge of the English lower leagues, brings in Damian Delaney while Iain Dowie, with a background in Italian reserve football, signs Matteo Alberti!

Something tells me someone else is calling the shots! Especially as Cerny and Ramage were both signed when we didn't even have a manager/head coach.

To be honest, I can't see Magilton's name and reputation attracting major players (though I could see Paulo Sousa doing just that). So if we have greater clout in the transfer market because of Briatore, it should be a good thing.

And, though transfers of Ledesma and Parejo have been widely criticised, the footballing quality of both players was clear to see even if (in Parejo's case in particular) the motivation to play Championship football wasn't.

Having said that, our rivals are strengthening their squads with professionals we've all heard of, while we're just letting ours go right now. We need to sign the right players, right now!
